Somehow, Sara, felt the dread enter her heart. She wasn't sure yet why. What was Rebecca doing here? Why would she come all the way up here? She never visited before, they knew each other, but were not close friends. Sara was sure she'll find out soon enough. It unsettled her because Rebbeca was the judge's household's staff. As much as she wished to stay positive, something inside of her stirred.
When her buggy pulled by gray and white spotted horse came closer Sara stood up and placed her hands over the rails grabbing on to it tight. Rebbeca's expression didn't give much of a clue.
"Rebbeca! What brought you all the way here?" With a shaky voice she asked the somber looking girl.
Without the word the young girl climbed down, and turned around to face her, but her eyes avoided Sara's.
"Hi Sara!"
"Hi Rebecca! I'm surprised to see you here."
"I'm sorry to come up here, but I'm afraid...." She stopped with whatever she was going to say and asked instead, "Where is your husband?"
"Why do you ask about my husband?" Sara's uncertainty showed in her voice. The fear grabbed at her heart, and she was afraid the sky would start spinning.
The young girl hesitated for a moment, "It is Rowena! She is not doing well. The doctor is with her at the moment. Sorry to tell you Sara but her father is not very pleased and he's issuing all kinds of threats towards your husband."
Sara took a deep breath, trying to bring her turbulent feelings under control. She looked at Rebecca with a blank, clueless expression on her face. Nothing of this made any sense to her.
"Why is he angry at Wes? I'm sure he had nothing to do with her sickness."
The young maid's obviously appeared uncomfortable, but her eyes filled with sympathy, and she continued to explain why she was here, " Rowena had a miscarriage, and is still bleeding. She is asking to see Wes."
When the words registered in Sara's brain, she had to hold herself tight since she was afraid to crumble down onto the boards beneath her feet.
Rowena pregnant! If she's asking to see Wes, it can only mean one thing. Sara came to a fast conclusion.
"Wes is not home! Are you sure she asked for my husband? Who sent you here?" Sara still tried to sort, and deny the evidence of the information she received.
"It was Rowena that insisted I come here. She's frightened of her father's anger. He's threatening to kill Wes."
"She must be mistaken. It can't be the truth." Sara spoke the words, but it was more to calm herself than for Rebbeca's benefit.
Rebecca shifted on her feet, obviously eager to depart. Sara couldn't blame her, since she knew Rowena gave her the unpleasant task she felt uncomfortable with.
"I must go back Sara. I'm very sorry to come here with that kind of news. " She appeared almost too afraid to stick around much longer. Too afraid that Sara will give her message to take back to Rowena. She was back in her seat and nudged the horse. He was chewing on the green grass by the driveway and was reluctant to abandon his meal, but with one more nudge he pulled the buggy down the road. Sara could only watch after her.
It was all lies. Her happiness, and security. As soon she wasn't around he found comfort with another woman. Did he love Rowena? He was going to marry her, but he married Sara only because of the baby. Sara's hand went protectively over her belly. The dull pain in her heart just got stronger. Her mind reflected his words when she told him she was pregnant with his child, "You played that well ! I'll marry you Sara, but don't mistaken. This is only because I want my child."
