I was finally allowed to step off the stool that the seamstress had been having me stand on, so I quickly stretched my sore back, then hurried out to the stables. I saddled Xavier, and then was on my way. I was hoping that I might have a chance to talk with Ella, and have a chance to explain the truth before the ball. How would she react? I did not know.

Would she be happy? Angry? I didn't know how women reacted to things like this, and although I had spent quite a lot of time with her, I still wasn't sure how Ella would feel about me not telling her everything. I had never lied to her, but I had always kept my background and family life quiet because I was afraid that she would treat me differently if she knew the truth. I just hoped that she would forgive me so that I could find out if she loved me like I had come to love her.
