Castiel drummed his fingers against the desk, as Mr. Byrnes talked, scrolling through the power point. Castiel payed little attention, but still took notes, his pencil scribbling against the paper quickly. Mr. Byrnes droned on and soon Castiel found himself unable to concentrate. He zoned out, staring at the power point with less expression that of a brick.
He hated history class. It was so stupid, learning about things in the past when it's... Well, in the past. People said don't cry over spilt milk. Why couldn't it be that way with history class? Yet, he was in Advanced Placement, so that was good. He had a feeling that it wouldn't be so easy this year, though. Junior year was harder than he'd thought it would be. School was a good distraction, though. He didn't have to think about home and what it would be like when he got there.
"And, Castiel," Mr. Byrnes said, as he stared at his computer screen, moving on. "Can you tell me what the definition of-"
Just then, Castiel could let out a big sigh and breathe again, because- thank God- a kid walked into the class. Castiel was already looking down at his notes, hoping to find whatever Mr. Byrnes was talking about. He found the only definition in his notes and kept his notes open to that page.
"Ah, Mr. Winchester," Mr. Byrnes said.
Castiel looked up, and stared. The boy stared right back at him, his green eyes locking with Castiel's blue ones. Instantly, Castiel stopped breathing. He held his breath, dazed. He didn't dare blink. That would break the spell he was engulfed in. Dean Winchester's eyes stayed line up with his, continuing to stare. Mr. Byrnes said something but neither of them were paying attention. Dean's eyes glistened with... Confusion? Amazement? Perhaps he was just intrigued. Whatever it was, Castiel didn't care.
"Winchester?" Mr. Byrnes asked, frowning.
Dean Winchester turned away from the blue-eyed boy. Castiel couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed. Several people were staring at him, including his twin sister, Charlie. She raised her eyebrow at him, as if asking, what the hell was that about?
Castiel blushed.
Dean Winchester nodded. "Yeah, Byrnes?"
Mr. Byrnes gazed, perplexed. "Mr. Winchester, in this classroom, you will be told to address me as Mr. Byrnes. Now, please. Take your seat."
Dean smirked, and replied with, "Yes, Mr. Byrnes,"
Everyone knew Mr. Byrnes was strict, and almost everyone hated him. But for Dean Winchester, a new student, to play with him like that triggered a deep interest inside of Castiel for this green-eyed wonder.
Dean Winchester sat at the only empty seat- the seat in front of Castiel. Before he sat down, Dean stared into Castiel's eyes with great focus as if he were trying to solve a puzzle.
Mr. Byrnes announced, "This is Dean Winchester. He is a new student here and I don't want to see any of you messing with him. He's here for an education, like the rest of you are, so I expect you treat him as a student. Nothing more, nothing less," he had a way of turning an announcement into a fucking life lesson. "Where was I..?" He trailed off, and then nodded. "Oh, Castiel."
Castiel rattled off the definition. As he did, he caught Dean Winchester's eye, gazing at him and taking in every word as he talked, his expression stony but his eyes wide and bright. Castiel thought that maybe he was just listening to listen, not to understand the words. You don't have to hear words to fall in love with someone's voice, as Castiel's mother used to say.
It had been a meaningful quote to Castiel for a long time, until Lori Novak died of cancer a year ago. Those had been her last words to Castiel. He didn't exactly know why she'd pick that to say, but he figured it was for the purpose of giving him one last piece of advice before leaving forever.
