{Chapter Fifteen}
I kinda scoffed and crossed my arms, "Wow. That's really assuring. You know I think you're trying to pull this whole "mysteriously sexy macho-man" thing but it really isn't working for you."
Alec rolled his eyes, "Because that is definitely what I'm going for here." But I could tell I had touched a nerve.
"You know what," I declared, "I don't have to go with you. Nope. Since I do not have the confidence of my own saftety nor the trust for you guys, I hereby say "fuck this" and I am going to go. This is all probably a bunch of bullshit. I want out."
Nick sighed, "Lily, there is no out."
"And why the hell not? I didn't asked to be dragged into this."
"No one ever does, but sometimes we have to do things we don't want to do."
"You sound like my mother."
"Is that supposed to be an insult?"
I shut up after that. But not for long. "So seriously guys. Tell me what's up."
Nick glanced around, then looked back at me. "Alright. Here's the deal: You, Lily, are very important-"
I cut him off. "Oh am I?" I shot Alec a glare, but he wouldn't meet my eyes, "If I'm so important, why didn't he help me out?"
"Because he couldn't risk letting the crucifix falling into Malice's hands," Nick answered calmly, almost eerily. My jaw nearly dropped.
"Oh, so a fucking piece of wood is worth more than my life? I'm sorry but you can literally buy those on eBay for like a buck fifty. Damn, I must be really important to you."
Nick sighed, muttering something to himself before speaking, "No, Lily, you don't understand. That's not an ordinary crucifix. It's the only remaining piece of wood left from the actual cross."
I blinked in surpise and shock, "You mean the one that Jesus died on?"
He nodded, "The one and only. Now, with this tiny piece of wood, the magical qualities it possesses is unimaginable. So you can see why Malice would want it."
I took a moment to process that. The cross. The actual cross that the J-man died on. I spent my entire life going to church and learning about the crucifixtion, but the fact that the last piece of that cross was in the room with me was a bit mind-bloggling. "I got that, but what does Malice actually want?"
"Oh the usual. World domination and the sorts."
"Ah. And what does this have to do with me?"
Nick looked over at Alec, "Alec, I think you ought to explain this."
Before he could open his mouth, I interjected angrily, "I'm sure you could explain this just fine."
"No," Nick stepped back and Alec took his place, sorrow written all over his face.
"Lily, I-"
"Save it. Just tell me what I need to know," I snapped angrily.
He sighed, "Okay. So Malice has been a ghost for a very long time, and a couple of decades after he died, he grew very powerful. He went beyond the vengeful spirit level to something almost demonic. So, there's this prophecy, right-"
"Go figure. How much more cliche can this whole situation get?"
"And it says that when a ghost falls in love with a human, it is possible for that love to turn the ghost human again. Like permanently. And that ghost- who's now a human- will be able to bring down Malice."
I frowned in confusion, "Okay I didn't even know that was possible but I'm not even going to question it but... how does that apply to me again?"
"Well, Malice was furious about this prophecy, so he asked a witch-"
"Wait, those exist too?"
"Lily please," Nick interceded.
"Sorry."
"Anyways," Alec continued, "he asked said witch to provide a spell that would be able to break the prophecy. Unfortunately, the witch said that prophecies could not be broken, but she could change it. So she took a lily flower and boiled it into a soup, which she fed to her slave, a girl named Annabeth."
"And..?"
"Annabeth is your great-great-great-great-great grandmother."
"What?!"
Nick jumped in, "You forgot a 'great'."
"Dude whatever it really doesn't matter."
"Guys," I said, drawing back their attention, "What was the spell?"
"The first female daughter of that line will be the either the downfall of Malice, or the one to bring Malice to victory."
I paused, "So... that's me? Damn. That's ridiculous."
Nick nodded, "So if Malice gets his hands on you, he could use you to bring himself to power. And if you end up posing a threat, he could easily kill you."
I nodded, unable to speak. The weight of his words bore down upon me and my mind swirled.
"Oh, and one more thing," Nick said.
I looked up at the two men. He nudged Alec, who seemed reluctant to speak. Nonetheless, he opened his mouth to speak.
"You know the whole... "ghost-to-human love" thing?" he asked. My eyes widened.
"No..."
He grabbed my hand. It wasn't cold like before. It was warm and soft and... full of life. I gasped.
"Alec?"
He nodded, "It's me, Lily. I'm the one in the prophecy. It's me."
I squeezed his hand, "No. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Dammit, Alec." I whispered, tears leaking from the corner of my eyes. He's alive. I looked at him through glassy eyes. His face was no longer a pale canvas. His cheeks were rosy and his face had a soft glow, but it was his eyes. Those hazel eyes were more vibrant than I had ever imagined.
"When.. When did this happen? How? Oh my gosh. I can't believe this. You flew us here, you were a ghost not ten minutes ago!"
He hesitated, "I just... thought that I had lost someone I really cared about. And then I realized that I didn't just care about her. I love her."
"Oh," was all I could get out, choking on happiness. There was a small moment of silence. "Well, congratulations I guess. Have fun being human. Oh my gosh, this is crazy. And I hope you get her back, whoever she is." I said.
He looked up, a glimmer of hope in his eyes, "You, you forgive me?"
I gave him a half-smile, "Well, I can't exactly blame you for not wanting the end of the world."
He broke out into a smile.
"Who is she, by the way?" I asked, trying not to sound too curious. Nick let out a little laugh. "What?"
Alec stared into my eyes, and clutched my hand a little tighter, "Lily."
"Yeah?"
"It's you."
