Property of RussiaMy family seemed to forget that we mostly use sign. I guess it was because high school was so loud. But Belarus started talking about how almost all of her classes had friends of hers in. She had also met a cute boy named Kazakhstan, but she wouldn't tell us much before heading to the next topic.
Ukraine and I listened quietly to her. I don't think my brother forgot. But it wasn't just that unspoken rule in my family or his slight introverted nature keeping him quiet. I could tell that Ukraine had something on his mind. But, couldn't ask him about it. I didn't want to interrupt my sister, and I was too hesitant to get his attention.
I had apparently zoned out worrying about my brother, because now Belarus has finished and her eyes were on us. She was inviting one of us to tell about our day. I glance at Ukraine again, and he still looks hesitant. But, he opens his mouth and begins to talk.
"Nothing too interesting happened at school," he informed us. He spoke slow, and his voice was soft and soothing. His hands moved to sign out his sentences as he said them, which was new. I think I'll just listen to him instead of reading his signs.
"Aww, that's no fun! Something must have happened! Tell us about ASL class, oh two have that together, right? Did anything fun happen?" Belarus asked. This school day must have removed her filter. She spoke fast, and she was very eager to make us speak. She didn't move her hands like Ukraine did. It was okay, since I could hear her, it was just a bit different needing to listen instead of watch.
"Well, the teacher was nice, and she found Russia being mute was pretty cool," Ukraine said. His hands kept moving, albeit hesitantly.
We locked eyes for a moment. It wasn't even a second, but in that short moment, I think we came to an agreement. He wouldn't talk about how I came in or how we came out of the classroom. It wasn't like we were embarrassed or anything, but Belarus tends to take things a little too far. We don't want to worry her. And, she'd tell our father, and I definitely don't want to know what he would do if he found out about the small boy that tried to hurt me.
"That's really all there was," Ukraine finished, pausing his signs to scratch the back of his neck nervously.
Belarus groaned and said something about how he was no fun. The two then turned to me, and I wondered where to start.
My day was pretty wild. I really liked the friends I had made in my classes like Canada, Japan, Philippines, and America. I reunited with my old friends, Estonia, Poland, and Slovenia. In astronomy class there was the whole cosmonaut versus astronaut thing, which I still stand strongly by how they are called cosmonauts. I would leave out the part about the small boy, but I think I'd have enough to talk about besides him.
So, I began to excitedly sign out my day. I listed the friends I made, I talked about the cosmonauts (Belarus and Ukraine were on my side), and I talked about the girls. My siblings seemed happy I had met them again, since we used to be so close before I was pulled out of school. Belarus wanted me to invite them over sometime. She liked hanging out with them when we were kids, and she wanted to catch up and talk about drama with some fellow girls. I rolled my eyes, but agreed with a nod.
"Oh, and what about that boy from lunch?" Belarus asked, a playful smirk appearing on her features. "What was his name? Amerika?"
I felt blood rush to my face. It got hot and I can guarantee I was red. I shook my head fast, trying to say how it wasn't like that. She kept teasing me about him, but we just met! She just smiled wickedly at me.
When Ukraine asked what she meant, she explained: "Ross here met a boy that he fell head over heels for,"
She wasn't able to finish the rest of what she was saying before I covered her mouth and gave her a look that begged her to stay quiet. She just laughed, which to me sounded like and evil cackle.
