| Chapter Twelve: Explanations Explained |
"Leila?" Logan said barely above the whisper. He stared at her with sad eyes, but her face was only stern with a small smirk slightly evident. "Wha- Why would you ever work for Stryker?" he asked, his anger slightly growing and his fists beginning to clench.
Leila looked to Stryker and they shared a look. Stryker turned to Logan, and Logan had noticed he wore a mask covering a majority of his face. "And what's with the mask?"
The smile that was also on Stryker's face disappeared. "It's to cover things I would rather leave hidden, Wolverine,"
Logan tried his best to contain himself so he could get the answers he wanted. "And how are you even alive?" he finally asked. It bothered him most, seeing someone return from the dead. William chuckled, and it grew louder into a sinister laugh that only provoked Logan.
"Did I say something funny?"
"No, not at all," Stryker said once he was able to stop laughing. "I just find it amusing how I was able to survive. It even surprised me,"
"Care to explain?"
"You know your little friend, the telepath. What was her name? She was supposed to be dead along with me,"
Logan tensed and clenched his fist even more. "Jean?"
"Yes, her! The red head! If Xavier was right, then her own telepathic force field did more than encase herself in a cocoon and protect her when the dam broke. Your other friend, Cyclops is what you call him- when he came and shot that beam into the lake and set Jean free, the force field broke and somehow the energy it held was enough to resurrected me,"
"That's impossible. Jean doesn't have that kind of power,"
"Ah," Stryker said with a smile, "but her other side does, yes? The Phoenix?"
"The what? How do you even know all of this?!" Logan yelled, growing more frustrated.
"Leila has always been good at gathering information. She's one of my best spies,"
Logan looked to Leila, his attention brought back to her. "Leila, why are you working for him? He isn't a good man, I would know,"
"I know all about you, Wolverine. Or should I say Weapon X?" Leila finally spoke. She blinked a few times before looking around, confused. When she finally saw Logan it was as if it was the first time she had seen him in ages.
"Logan! Logan, what's going on?" she asked slowly backing away from Stryker. Logan only stared at her. He didn't understand what was happening, but he guessed he should help her. He stopped, feeling suspicious, but it wasn't his instinct, it was just his mind playing little scenarios in his head.
"Is this more of your tricks, Leila?" he growled.
"My what? What tricks? Who is this guy?" she asked question after question. Stryker's head snapped towards Leila once he realized she wasn't playing. He reached out and grabbed her arm, causing her to let out a shout. "Let me go! Logan help!"
Realizing she was serious, he began to rush towards her, his claws now out and ready to attack. He stopped as a bullet hit the side of his head, throwing it to the side. When it fell out and his head began to heal, he let out a slow growl and looked to the man who had shot him.
"You really wanna go, bub?" he asked with his teeth clenched. "Ow!" his head turned towards Leila to find Stryker bending her head over to have his neck facing him and he dripped something in a mark on her neck.
As he let her go, she stood back up slowly, taking in a relieved breath it seemed to be. "There we go," Stryker said. "I thought I almost lost you,"
"You're still controlling people, you coward?" Logan growled, his claws still out. "Is she even a mutant? Are you controlling humans now?"
"Oh, she didn't tell you? Leila has the power to generate complex telepathic illusions, like my son did. She also has enough telepathic power to block out others who may try and enter her mind, like Xavier, and fool them. I must say, it is a valuable mutation,"
"So you're the reason I've been having weird dreams, seeing things that aren't there, and attacking people I care most about?!" Logan growled, letting anger cloud the fact that Leila was being mind controlled. "Don't you think Stryker is gonna kill you too? He wants to kill all the mutants, Leila. All of them!"
Leila had a dazed look on her face, realizing he was telling the truth. But the serious look soon came back, showing that Stryker's serum was still controlling her.
"Yeah," Leila answered plainly. "But it was fun watching you go through all that," she said with a smirk. The same one that she had all those times he acted strangely. It was because she was amused by his actions.
Logan clenched his fists tighter, and made his claws longer. His growling failed to cease as he looked at the two and his anger only grew. "You little-"
"You wouldn't hit a little girl, would you?" Stryker said with a smirk playing on his lips. "No, but I can kill you again!"
He started to run towards Stryker, letting out a loud yell as he did and ignoring the bullets that hit him. "Stryke- Aah!" he shouted. His claws slid back into his knuckles quickly as he gripped his head and hit the floor.
"Nice job, Leila," he heard faintly from Stryker, but it hurt too much to pay attention to. "But we need him for future mutants. Release him,"
Logan stopped feeling the aching pain in his head, but the shouting continued. It wasn't from him, it was from all the other mutants in the institute and the world. Panting, Logan got up with short grunts in between. "Stop this, Leila," he struggled to let out.
"Remember who you are-what you are; a mutant. Don't let him control you for his own selfish needs. Please,"
He looked at Leila who stared at him. She looked like she was coming to her sensed again. "Please,"
Logan was taken aback when she laughed in his face, "Sorry, Wolverine, but I'm not weak like you,"
