“C’mon Veronica, don’t blackout now. We have a mission to complete!” A familiar voice says. My heavy eyelids slowly open to see Jarrod sticking his head right in front of me.
Faded white walls, beeping machines, the smell of antibacterial everywhere… Slowly my thoughts register where I am.
“WHERE’S GRACE?” My body flings forward, tears welling up in the corners of my eyes.
“She’s-“Jarrod sighs, “She’s dead.”
Dead
The word fills my body with venom and bitter and sadness. I clump a bunch of the sheets in the palm of my hands and grit my teeth together as a painful scream releases out of me.
“She was my only best friend!” I cry out. My chest heaves up and down as a big sob starts happening.
Nurses look away, giving my privacy. All I want to do is run to the top of the building, jump off and keep running away, screaming my lungs out.
But I can’t jump off of the building, I’ll die. I’ll be dead ha ha see there’s that word again. The word filled with poison and slithering demons. Apparently it can just be tossed around like it means nothing.
How dare he say it without any emotion? I want to punch this- this fat asshole in the face! His fingers slide across my back and he rubs it up and down, trying to calm me down. I shrug him off.
“Oh, someone left this for you.” Jarrod remembers, putting his hand in his back pocket and retrieving a red envelope. He hands it to me and I take it.
On the red envelope is my name scribbled in thick black calligraphy. I open it suspiciously to see on the white paper only one sentence.
Ones dead, you’re next.
Paranoia seeps through my body like someone let off a smoke bomb. Starting from the tips of my fingers I shiver feverously. It moves through my arms, down to my feet. All of a sudden I am freezing cold.
Someone is after me. It has to be someone I know.
