When I woke up, I had no clue where we were. The sky was bright and Devereaux was listening to G-Eazy. I wanted him for a while before he noticed I was awake.
"There's coffee and blueberry muffins," he said.
"Thanks. Are we in another state," I asked?
"Yeah. Bout two hours into Illinois."
"May I ask where we're going," I asked, taking a bite of muffin.
"Raventown, Illinois. Got something I need to do and I need a date," he said a slight smile on his face.
"Okay as long as you're cool with your date having bed hair, no make-up, in sweats and a tee."
To that he actually laughed.
"I got you covered, Kenzie," he said and flicked the signal.
I was definitely interested. Devereaux got off on an exit labeled Raventown 5 miles. Since I'd never heard of the place I figured it was small. This made it even stranger for him to have business here. Once we reached the town Devereaux's whole demeanor changed.
First, we stopped at what seemed to be the only hotel in the city. Devereaux had me wait in the car while he got a room. The room wasn't half bad. There was a giant king-sized bed, a six-head shower and a tub with jets in it. There was a small kitchen area, too.
The next stop was a tailor's shop. When we walked in everyone froze. Some of them looked like they'd seen a ghost. Other's looked as though the crowned prince had come home.
"Mr. Ravenwell, your suit is ready," an old white man with white hair and steel gray eyes said.
"Thank you, Mr. Thorn. I hate to do this to you but my date here needs a dress. Preferably one to match my tie," Dev said.
I just blinked.
"Miss, could you please come this way," One of the girls dressed in pants suits said.
I looked at Devereaux who said, "It's fine, Kenzie. I'll be out here."
''Okay." To the girl I said, "Lead the way."
The shop was surprisingly big and filled with all sorts of evening wear. The girl showed me to a chair. One brought me a bottle of water while the other went to find dresses to match Devereaux's tie.
"Do you have in preferences, Miss?"
"Hollis. Mackenzie Hollis," I said. ''And no velvet, please."
The girls came back with 3 forest green dresses. The first was probably my favorite. It was long and flowing but the back and sides were out, but in the end, I chose the last one. It had long sleeves and a sweetheart neckline. I didn't even realize there were slits in it until I tried it on.
It was formfitting or it would be if my hips and ass were a few sizes smaller. The girls took notes and then let me put my clothes back on. I didn't notice Devereaux standing near the back watching until I was fully dressed.
"Good choice, ma."
"When do you need this back," the girl who'd taken my measurements asked.
I looked at Devereaux.
"6 hours," he said.
"Excellent," the old man, Mr. Thorn said from out of nowhere.
''Let's go," Dev said taking my hand.
I let him lead me to the car before I said anything. He opened my door and I slid inside. I watched him walk around and get in.
"I'm curious. What are we doing in this tiny town that I need a dress and you a suit," I asked.
