Was I happy to be up at seven in the morning on an off day? No, but I was excited to be spending the holiday with my boyfriend and his family. Devereaux had been spending more time down here and seemed more at ease than the first time he decided to take me down there. The ride down was quite uneventful and I had slept most of the way.
Once we got into town, we went to a house instead of a motel. The house belonged to Eira and her husband Daniel. Eira was so happy to see me as she let us into her beautiful home.
"Hi, Devereaux," Eira said wrapping her arms around her nephew.
"Hey, Aunty E."
"And Mackenzie, it's SOOO good to see you," she said squeezing me tightly.
"You too, Eira," I said.
"The kids are still in their room and Daniel had to run to the office. So, for now it's just us. Do you guys want something to nibble on or some coffee," she said.
"I'll have some coffee," Dev said.
"I'll have some after I get dressed," I said.
Eira showed me to the guest bedroom. I changed out of my t-shirt and sweats into dress pants and a sweater. After applying a little make up and putting my hair up into a knot, I rejoined Eira and Devereaux. They were discussing the gifts Dev had bought for his little cousins. Dev looked up as I entered the kitchen. He held out a mug filled with coffee.
"Lots of cream. Lots of sugar. Just a little coffee."
"Thank you," I said taking a sip.
It was perfect.
"So, Kenzie, Dev tells me you've gotten a promotion since you were last here," Eira said.
"Yeah. It's more work but I'm right where I want to be."
"That's so great that you love your job," she said.
We made small talk until Danny, Mickey, and the twins came down stairs. Needless to say, they were excited to see Dev. I just sat at the table with Eira. Danny was 16, Mickey was 15 and the twin girls Brisa and Kisa were 13 and they all thought Dev was the coolest thing ever.
"We better get going. Dan is going to meet us at Dad's," Eira said.
I got my bag and my coat. Together the seven of us headed out. Eira and her four children piled into their minivan. While Dev and I followed them in his Acura. The giant manse was even more beautiful in the winter. I said as much.
"The first time I saw this place it was winter time. Just a couple weeks after my mom died. She's buried here, along with my grandmother. I remember thinking the house looked scary all covered in white. It looked like a giant skeleton," Dev said.
"You were just a kid who'd just lost his mother. I bet a lot of things seemed scary," I said.
"Yeah, but in some ways, I'm still intimidated by this place. It's like I'll never live up to the name this house stands for. I don't know, it's crazy," Dev said dismissing the thought.
I took his hand in mine and gave it a squeeze. He turned off the engine and we got out. A moment of deja vu hit me. I couldn't help remembering the first time were here and what it lead to. I shook my head. Again, we were the last to arrive. Even Daniel's car was here.
We were ushered toward the giant kitchen. On one side of the room was a buffet with so many breakfast foods I didn't even recognize some of them. On the other side a bunch of tables were set up. My mouth watered at the thought of all that food but Aneirin was headed our way. There was actually a smile on his face.
