Devereaux was gone for two more days and it was driving me crazy. This was the longest we had been a part since we had become an official couple. So, I was more than excited when he asked me to pick him up from the airport. I threw on a cami and some yoga pants. I threw my hair up into a ponytail and headed out. It was only a fifteen-minute ride to the airport.
When I got there, I found a parking spot not far from his terminal. I walked into the airport and looked around. Dev said he would be landing at Gate 57. When I got to the gate, they were just letting people off of the plane.
I waited patiently until I saw him. I expected him to at least smile when he saw me. Instead his face was cold and unreadable. I stopped in my tracks.
Just behind Devereaux was a group of men. Dev stopped and talked with the men. It was a few minutes before they all shook hands and parted ways. Dev started toward me with one of the men close behind him. The man looked familiar though I could not place his face at first. The man was saying something as they got closer.
A brief smile passed over Devereaux's face as he reached me. He kissed me softly. The man watched us for a second.
"Devereaux, it's been a long day. Can we get moving, boy," the man said.
"Sure thing, old man," Dev said.
"I parked right over there," I said.
"Well don't just stand there. You have the keys," the man said.
I rolled my eyes and started toward the car. I kept my pace fast but Devereaux caught up to me easily. He took the keys out of my hand with a sexy grin on his face. He seemed more himself now that we were away from the men he had departed the flight with.
"I'm drivin', ma," he said.
"You just got off a plane. Don't you wanna relax," I said.
"Not, really."
He grinned at me and I felt my face heat up as I blushed a bright red. He put his arm around my shoulders. As we reached the car the man caught up with us.
"So, boy, ain't ya gonna introduce me," the man asked.
"You a grown man. You coulda took the initiative," Dev said and then turned to me.
"Ma, this is Benjamin Davon. Unk, this is my goddess Mackenzie Hollis."
The recognition hit me instantly. This man was Travis' father. He looked like an older version of Devereaux's best friend but Travis had a few different features that he must have gotten from his mother. Unk took my hand and kissed it.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mackenzie. I've heard so much about you," Unk said.
"Nice to meet you, too. I'aven't heard that much about you. But then again Devereaux doesn't talk much," I said, light teasing in my voice.
"I heard he's working on that," Unk said, looking at me, "thanks to you."
Dev shot me a pleased look as he threw their bags into the small trunk. He came to stand next to me. He kissed the top of my head.
He said, "You were the one who told me to find someone who made me need to be better."
"I did."
A look passed over the older man's face. I wondered if he was thinking of Travis' mother; Devereaux had told me she had passed couple of years ago. Or if he was thinking of Devereaux's mother.
"Let me treat you guys to lunch at the restaurant," Unk said.
Devereaux looked at me.
"Sure. I don't have any plans. You didn't wanna do something else," I asked.
