Evangeline Arnold's world was turned upside down the day that the father of her child, Javonte Wells was sentenced to 4 years in the slammers due to a gun charge that resulted in death. Now all that she has is his voice over the phone which was rare...
My car had broken down. And I didn't want to borrow any more money from my parents, so that left me with no choice but to take the local bus. I hadn't ridden in one of them in so long that I forgot how to signal my stop and almost missed it. "Mommy, where we go?" Kayley complained as I pulled her along the cracked up concrete.
If Hazel tried anything while I was with my daughter then I'd definitely be going to jail today.
I made it to the townhouses she lived in.
Javonte had to give me the directions to her crib, and he also said he let her know that I was coming here to pick up his twin sons Tobias and Tremont.
"Oh! It's you." She hissed after answering her paint-chipped front door "boys hurry up and get your stuff on."
She had bud light cans and cigarette butts all over the coffee table in the living room.
Tobias ran out first and swung his arms around Kaley "hey, kk, baby!"
"So uh where's your car?" Hazel poked her bonnet wearing head from the door.
"I parked down the street, c'mon kids."
"We never got along and you know why that is," a cigarette hung from her full lips "but you look a lot different from the first time I saw you and Javonte ain't worth the stress because life goes on so don't close yourself off because that dude is locked down this ain't the first nor will it be the last time he's in this situation."
A frown took over my facial features. "When I need your opinion, Hazel, I'll ask until then please stay the hell out of my life because I can assure you I don't care enough to voice my opinion on yours."
She cocked her head back. "Bitch, fuck you make this the last time you bring your trifling ass to my doorstep too."
"I didn't want to come here anyway with this small ass smelly apartment." I grabbed my child's hand and walked off. "Ghetto dumpster diving looking ass."
A vase landed on the concrete then more glass followed from the doorway. "Come back here bitch since you so motherfucking bad!" she yelled.
She swore Javonte and her were still in a deeply loving relationship when he and I started to mess around. But she was just some jump-off broad that he slipped up and got pregnant, so she was still bitter beyond repair.
Always talking about how she doesn't want him, yet his fucking name stays in her mouth more than his dick ever been.
"I'm sorry about that baby," I told Kaley who looked saddened by the whole altercation.
When we got to where we were headed my purse and everything else was checked through before I got to see him.
"Daddy!" Kaley ran towards him.
"Where your older brothers at?"
I took a seat ready to explain my part of things "long story short, we ended up getting into it. Hazel and I."
Javonte followed by taking a seat of his own.
"Are you serious?"
"I told you before that we don't get along plus you know how she is," I said.
No matter how much I tried, it felt like I was never heard.
"How are you?"
I ran a hand through my hair. There were so many words that I could reply with. And they were all synonymous with tiredness, yet all that came out of my mouth was "good."
What a lie.
"I'm good too especially now I have my girls near."
I laid my manicured hands across the metal table as he grabbed hold of them tightly. I wanted to break down again but kept strong for the sake of our daughter. "So did you get my letter?"
"Yeah, and I agree." he leaned back in his seat, "I never asked you to be my backbone, but you became that anyway out of love. Eva, so even if you were to stop everything now I'd understand."
"I will never stop loving you."
Damn! I wanted to kiss every corner of his face. "I know that, but just in case you came here asking for my permission to let go then consider this that."
We stared at one another afterward as he withdrew his hands from me. It was like we were both confined―Him to this place and me to him. And as long as he was here then so was a large portion of my heart.
I didn't want to be free from his hold.
"Can we have ice cream?" Kaley questioned which made us laugh once again she proved to be that ray of sunshine in our lives. And I realized my emotions were interpreted better written than I myself could ever speak. My words repeatedly got me choked up or became lost on the tip of my tongue.
I needed him to know.
