Evangeline Arnold's world was turned upside down the day that the father of her child, Javonte Wells was sentenced to 4 years in the slammers due to a gun charge that resulted in death. Now all that she has is his voice over the phone which was rare...
The day that the incident happened, I was out doing last-minute shopping for Kaley's nursery with Evelyn. My water broke as soon as we approached my car in the parking lot. My sister instantly started panicking as if it was her about to deliver the baby meanwhile Javonte was working his job at a meat factory-like every other weekday.
All of his colleagues have confirmed in one way or the other that they saw him. He was halfway home when he stopped for gas and a guy he was familiar with approached him asking for a ride.
It's on surveillance video from the gas station.
While they were on the road, they were stopped and arrested for the murder of Shane Dixon. Claiming Javonte was the guy's getaway driver even though there are witnesses and video evidence proven otherwise.
His current lawyer brought this up in court the following week as I sat in the back watching. Javonte stood before the judge in a pressed suit and reading glasses far from the way he looked when I first met him. The judge was a White Latina woman who didn't seem at all convinced with what was presented to her. Nobody could look past the fact he was gang-affiliated.
She asked him "is it true that you and Mr. Greg," The name of the guy who committed the crime "—run in the same crowd that promotes violence and other destructive acts in your neighborhood?"
"I'm no longer in a ga—" His words were cut short as she spoke over him.
"But at the time of the murder you were, right?" she continued "and you and Mr. Greg knew each other, yet you want us to believe you weren't aware that he murdered someone prior to letting him into your vehicle?"
"Yes, your honor."
"There are witnesses and surveillance videos that prove that Mr. Wells couldn't possibly be an accomplice in this murder." His lawyer said.
"Mr. Greg says otherwise..." She replied, "he said you and him planned the entire thing."
I didn't know a lot about Jamal Greg aka Gritty I mean I may have seen him once or probably twice around the way. He'd hang out on corners, porches, and outside of the convenience stores in baggy clothes—one time he even held the door open for me.
Javonte's friends were always doing kind stuff like that for me just because I was dating him so I never thought much about it until now of course.
I wondered what had driven him to switch up and lie like this because whatever it was it added 5 more years to Javonte's sentence.
My chest tightened once I heard this.
When it was over I tried grabbing hold of him, but they cuffed him and moved him out of the courtroom.
"Javonte! Javo—" I cried in a weak hoarse voice, unlike my normal sound.
He glanced back at me upon hearing his name called. Even though I couldn't see it on his face I knew for certain he had to be just as sad as I was. And too often do we allow sadness to turn into anger.
5 more years of lonely nights, 5 more years of single parenting, 5 more years of working 2 jobs to fill in where he left off.
5 more years without him.
