Mariam found herself standing in front of her neighbor's door the next morning. Contemplating whether or not she should return to her apartment. She knocked on his door for the second time that week.
There was shuffling inside, footsteps and the door swung open. Her neighbor looked at her blankly, shirtless once again. She tried not to stare.
"I - uh, thank you for this!" Mariam held out the neatly folded hoodie.
"My stupid man jacket," he mused and took the pullover. She blushed despite herself and he watched the girl fidget. "Anything else?"
Her lips parted slightly, then she pressed them together. Mariam isn't sociable. She is inept when dealt in situations involving other people, incompetent in social conversations. "I uh... I don't know your name. I mean, you never-"
"Luke," he interrupted.
"Oh," Mariam breathed. She smiled awkwardly and rested a hand on her chest. "I'm Mariam."
He grunted and grabbed the doorknob. "Is that all?"
Her eyes widened a bit before nodding. "Yes-" and their conversation was cut short by Luke abruptly closing the door. Mariam sighed, feeling dejected.
She walked back into her home with flustered innervation. He was quite passive aggressive, her neighbor. Her rather lame attempt at a cordial exchange between them was a bust. However, she did get his name.
"Luke," she whispered feeling just a bit accomplished.
