When Mariam regained consciousness, Luke was seated against the wall across from where she was slumped back against her apartment door. He regarded her with a brow raised and her cheeks dusted pink at the recollection of what had occurred between them.
She attempted to search for words in an excuse of defending her reaction. However, despite whatever she tried to say, Luke would just consider her an inept loser. The thought made her brows knot. She couldn't help the sense of nervousness that possessed her when he's around. They weren't even friends and yet Mariam knew the fitful thumping in her chest was dissimilar to the sensation she felt in the company of others.
His eyes lazily watched her expression contort from pleasantry to one of confusion.
"I fainted," Mariam breathed.
"You should get checked," Luke suggested as he straightened himself into a proper sitting position.
Her cheeks puffed childishly at his blatant insult and he rolled his eyes at her. Her lips parted as she conjured up words of defense but Luke suddenly stood up and crossed the space between them, sitting next to her. He extended his arm and pointed to the beginning of his wrist. "Liz?" She read the black cursive writing."My mom," he explained.
"Was that your first one?" She inquired, genuinely interested. She mused on the idea that most guys have big hearts with MOM tattooed in the center.
"No." He turned slightly to show her the five tally mark on his other wrist. The ink was a bit faded and seemed unprofessional compared to the others on his body.
"What does this one mean?" She asked curiously.
"A band," he said absently.
"Your favorite band?"
He was silent for a moment and Mariam glanced up at his face, a small smile graced his lips. "Actually, they suck."
Mariam blinked. It was the first time she saw Luke genuinely smile. "O-oh."
"I hate them so much." Luke shook his head as if recalling something, the smile widening on his lips as he suppressed a laugh. She couldn't help but smile herself.
"Then why'd you get the tattoo?"
Luke shrugged and pushed himself off the ground. "That's it for today, loser."
Mariam followed suit, her smile turning into a frown. "I'm not a loser."
He threw her a smirk and poked her forehead. "Okay, dork." And then he went inside his apartment.
Mariam pinched her warm cheeks and sighed. "I'm not a dork either," she muttered to herself. Fetching her scattered mail off the ground she unlocked her door and went inside her own home.
Collapsing on her couch, Mariam couldn't help but wonder what could have happened if she hadn't fainted. Her eyes widened and she shook those mischievous thoughts away. "For t-today?"
