I wake up, i don't know how much later, to the sight of my doctors doing their usual check up whenever something like this happens. I discreetly roll my eyes but my favourite nurse Harry obviously caught me. He chuckled and looked to the other doctors.
"Keep up the good attitude!" He says sarcastically as he exits.
"Only way I'll survive in here" I say back.
He flashes me a smile, with a hint of something else. Pity?
God! Even my doctors feel bad for me now.
I take my thumb and index finger and create a circle around my wrist. I can reach my finger on the other side. That's how my brother used to measure how thin I was. He used to be able to do it easily but my hands are very small so it was different.
I lay back down on the bed and stare at the ceiling. I focus on a stain on the ceiling. I wonder what caused that?
My thoughts are interrupted as I hear what sounds like somebody in front of my door. I look over at the small glass window and notice some dark curly hair. I then see eyes as the person tiptoes to look in. It's a boy? His eyes widen in shock as he notices that I've caught him and he disappears in a second.
I get up trying my best to steady myself and walk out the door. I take a quick glance at myself in the mirror. I'm wearing an oversized dusty rose knitted sweater and porcelain jeans. My hair is straight and reaches my shoulders. I hurry out the door and look around for this mystery boy.
He's not hard to find as he stands in the middle of the hallway looking completely lost. He has an interesting style. I walk over to where he is standing taking big steps with my hands on my back.
"It can be hard to find your way around this place but don't worry you'll get it someday" I say
He tenses?
"Hey are you okay?" I ask laying my hand on his shoulder.
He quickly turns around and spurts out " I'm fine thank you" and the turns around again walking away.
I laugh as he is headed to the delivery hall (I don't know what it's called but I mean the section where ladies give birth)
I catch up with him by doing a little jog. "That's not the right direction"
He turns around looking defeated. "Help me? I'm sorry I was weird before I was just nervous"
Nervous? Why would he be nervous?
"I'll help you" he smiles "if you tell me why you were stalking me" I finish.
He looks embarrassed and scratches the back of his neck.
"Ummm it's just I-I saw someone answering my blinks and I wanted to find out who it was but I obviously got the wrong pers-"
"It was me" I inturrupt.
"I-it was?" He says with a small smile.
"Yeah" I say biting my inner cheek and looking down at my shoes. He's wearing what looks like thrifted boots.
"Why did you respond?"
"Why did you do it?"
We both ask the questions at the same time.
"I'll go first" he says "when I was younger I would always be in the hospital and my dad would drive me too all my appoinments. One time I had to stay for almost 2 weeks and my dad and I had this secret sign where I would blink 3 times with my flashlight to signal that I still was alive and he would respond with 3 blinks to tell me he was there."
"That's a cute story" I say and he blushes.
"Your turn" he says "why'd you respond"
"I don't know I guess it just caught my attention and I wanted to find out who did it"
"Well you found me." He says with a grin. "Now will you help me find my room. I just got a permanent room since they couldn't keep me in the emergency section for that long"
"What room are you in?" I ask
"006, I think"
"Really? I'm in 011. But you know thats just down the hall here" I answer
He laughs in embarrassment "and here I thought I would be rummaging the whole hospital before I found my room. My saviour"
I laugh and feel my cheeks heat up. What's happening?
