Chapter Sixteen: Strategic

"So what's the plan now?" Jesse looked towards Arden who almost looked as though he had given up, just like I had

"We stay here" Arden told him "Shaun has a plan. A new plan, a plan that could change everything" He revealed, a spark of hope relighting inside of me

"What plan is that exactly?" Jesse turned his attention on Shaun

"We have been searching for survivors, we have been searching the country for people that can help us" Shaun began again "So far we have many different kinds of people helping us with many different fields here"

"Fields like what?"

"Well, we have a few engineers here to help with the security; we have doctors and a surgeon that help with the wounded. We have chefs, waiters and waitresses that know about food and where to find it, how to serve it. We have all kinds of people here that can help bond humanity back together"

"So you've crafted your own little town, that's magical" I spat "What does that have to do with getting humanity back?"

Shaun's jaw twitched "This little town girl, is the first step back to humanity"

"How?" Jesse shot, sensing my frustration

"I have two scientists here, they are very talented, they are working on... getting things back to where they should be" He answered, strategic and sly.  Something about his tone made me shudder. I suddenly sensed a bad vibe radiating off of him.
Something was wrong.

"How are scientists going to help the situation?" I snapped, my frustration brewing into anger

"They are the ones that started this mess by finding a cure for cancer, they are the ones that can reverse it" He explained with an easy shrug

"You can't be serious?" Jesse invaded, also pushing at his anger

"I've never been more serious in my life" Shaun nodded

I shook my head and looked towards Arden "And you are supporting this?"

Arden shrugged and averted his gaze "We have no options left"

I scoffed and rolled my eyes which earnt a glare from Shaun

"The most important reason I called the pair of you up here, was to inform you that you both did extremely well with the training earlier, you both proved yourselves to hold great power" Shaun began.
At this point I wasn't really interested in hearing anything else that came out of his mouth. I knew what his words had meant. He was trying to cure the disease; he was trying to cure Creatures. Perhaps it was possible, perhaps it was not, either way, I did not believe in the way he was running things, how I could have imagined him running things. He was putting people more at danger if he were experimenting with things

"Jesse, I want to offer you a position here"

"I wasn't aware this was a job interview" I shoved

Shaun gave me another glare before returning his gaze to Jesse

"I want you to become a teacher of defence and training, you have the skills to teach others"

Jesse stared at Shaun with an unreadable expression. His mouth was pulled into a straight line, his eyes were focused, and his jaw tense, then he spoke

"It would be my pleasure"

I couldn't believe the words I was hearing. Shaun was clearly a psychopath who was trying to play God, how was I the only one seeing it?
It was then I wondered how he was conducting these experiments on curing Creatures. Did he have a pile of them down in the basement, was there a basement? How much danger were we actually involved in? It didn't matter what questions I asked myself, I was dumbfounded, afraid of what was going to happen next.
