01 | new student

to my disappointment, summer break was over and school was back in session.

students were only waiting for the clock to reach lunch time.

once the bell rang, my friend lee chaeyeon and i rushed to the cafeteria.

we received our lunch and carried our trays to the table we usually sat with our other friends.

"minjoo chaeyeon!" hwang yeji motioned for us to sit down. "did you hear?"

"hear about what?" chaeyeon asked.

"there's a new student in class 3-1!" yeji explained. "apparently he's really good-looking."

"oh?"

"yeah. oh right, minjoo, how was your trip?"

"it was really fun-"

"she said there were a lot of cute guys on the tour-"

i blocked chaeyeon's mouth quickly, "i did not!"

yeji laughed as chaeyeon struggled to talk through my hand covering her mouth.

"mmh! mnmmmph!" chaeyeon started pointing at the entrance to the cafeteria, so i removed my hand. "that's him!"

"huh?"

"yeah! the new student," yeji said, looking at the door.

i followed her gaze and saw-

kim seungmin?!?!?

no way.

i blinked a couple of times, but there was no doubt that kim seungmin was walking towards the lunch line.

i had met seungmin and a few other friends at a group tour to north america over the summer. we planned on gathering together one day back in korea, but i wasn't expecting to see seungmin again this fast!

"look at all those people surrounding him!" yeji exclaimed.

indeed, seungmin was being bombarded by a huge crowd full of students that wanted him to eat lunch with them.

"it's the new student effect," yeji stated.

"the rumors were right, he is good-looking," chaeyeon admitted. "don't you think?"

"huh? oh, yeah, heh."

i watched as seungmin ended up sitting with a couple of the popular students in our grade.

it's been a while since we've had a new student, so of course seungmin becomes the center of attention the moment he steps foot into the school.

i wanted to at least say hi to him, but going up to him now would be no use. i would get pushed away by the gigantic crowd enclosing him.

i put my phone away, since it was unlikely seungmin would even have a chance to check his phone while all these students are bothering him.

"what's the new student's name?" chaeyeon asked, curious.

"kim seungmin," i blurted without thinking.
