I moved out of the doorway so that James could walk in.
"Anytime is a good time. Just don't mind the mess."
I could feel my friends eyes right on both of us as he walked in but I pretended that I didn't notice.
John got off the bed, probably to try and end the awkward tension that hung in the air. He held out the hand he wasn't using to hold Philip.
"I'm John Laurens, you must be another one of Alex's friends."
"I'm James, James Madison, I'm his co-worker at the law firm"
James took John's hand and shook it. He played it well because I knew I had ranted about Jefferson and James countless times to them. I could still see Laf and Herc eyeing him but I think they could tell not to say anything.
James but the bag of candies on my bedside table.
"Those are just some get well soon presents from the office. Theodosia arranged it, the only person I told about this was Mr. Washington but word travels fast around there."
"Aww that's so sweet Alex. You have such nice people at the office."
I could tell John meant it but from the short flash of panic that crosses James's face I could tell that he was assuming the worst.
I gave him a slight side hug with my good arm.
"You really are a sweet guy."
Laf came up to him.
"Iv heard great things about u from my brother. Heard you are an amazing writer."
"Wait who's your brother?" I should have realized from the similarities. I could already tell before Laf could even say a word.
"Thomas, well he's my half-brother. He also works at your firm."
Something about him saying it out loud made it completely worse. James turned pale and I could tell this was a first for him to.
Sorry this was short and honestly it's not my best work. My laptop still isn't working so I'm writing this on my phone right before my math final.
