Crutchie slowly started waking up with the sun on a hot morning in July. Jack's "penthouse" helped with the heat but July was July and it was still hot. From a glance, he could tell that it would be like that all day and that a crystal blue sky would be challenged by nothing but the skyscrapers and yellow sun by that evening. He smiled his crooked smile and looked to Jack on the other side of the rooftop, drawing, as usual, he hadn't yet noticed that the blonde was awake. Taking the brief opportunity he had to get down early, he pulled on the rest of his clothes and hat then tried to flex and stretch his bad leg, testing to see if it would be a good day, sometimes it would and he'd be able to walk, albeit with a bad limp and not for long but it was still walking. He winced as the familiar pain of not one of those days came back, magic springs couldn't do everything.

From the author:

I'm sorry this part took so long to get out and that it's so short. I tried writing alternate endings but ultimately this is where I always wanted it to end and I didn't know how to write a bridge between the time. From here is just where Newsies begins, I hope you enjoyed this and I hope you see the story in a different light now. Ask me any questions in the comments and I'll answer.
