"Hold on!-costumes! We can't walk into a halloween party with no costume", Cal laughed at that, finding it hilarious how disgraceful I think it is to arrive with no costume. Just as I was trying to figure out what exactly we could go as with us both looking like we just stepped out of a cocktail party-way too fancy to play it down, so the only thing to do would be to roll with it. Cal fidgets in his seat, noticeably on edge, "are you okay Cal?" I ask, seeing him stressed and looking around, as if trying to hide in the car. Lights started flashing and he turned the car back on and quickly drove around the corner into a dark alleyway. He turned around in his seat to face me. I began to panic. Something is going on, and I don't know what. I don't deal well with not knowing things. I realise how stupid I am being, sitting alone in some guys car in a dark alleyway with no one knowing where I am... I don't even have any shoes anymore, not that I feel I would need to run away, he makes me feel safe, but I need to know what is going on. Luckily he understands this and explains to me as best he can without trying to overwhelm me. "I'm from a band called 5 Seconds of Summer- you might have heard of them". I pause, never really having been into music as a child, I mostly read, but even I have heard of them before. "Oh" is all that I could muster. I can see how uncomfortable Cal is growing by the second, worried that this would be a big deal, I guess it is, but I'm not sure yet where this relationship is heading yet, so I don't bother stressing about the factors. My priority right now is to make him feel comfortable and safe, as he did for me. "I KNOW!" My voice seemed to shock him, and he looks at my face, brightly beaming, and it makes him calm down, laughing he asks "you know what?" I reply, proud of myself "you clearly don't enjoy having cameras following your every move... so if they can't tell its you then they can't follow you..." there is a pause and he cocks his head to the side, confused "yeah Lena, I'm not following you" I laugh at that and explain my idea "we need a costume for the party, and we need to stay hidden. So we simply need to find a dress up shop, and buy masks, that way we look the part without too much hassle". "You genius you!"
The drive to the store doesn't take too long but longer than it should have. Cal doesn't live here so I used my phone data to get directions to the nearest one. In the end we somehow circled around the store 3 times but never actually saw it. "We haven't been here before have we?" I laughed, "yes we have, remember thats the pet shop where you almost stopped to by a puppy". This went on for a while but finally we found the store, it was about to close so Cal ran ahead to get into the store, I followed bare foot, leaving my shoes in his car. He pops his head out to see what's taking so long, I look up to meet his eyes, slipping I almost fall in a puddle, ending up sitting on the ground in hysterics. He rushes over "I have to admit that was the funniest thing I've ever seen, and I've lived with 3 adult babies my whole life, so thats really saying something". He takes my hand and helps me up, swiftly scooping me into his arms and carrying me the rest of the way to ensure no more slips occur. His arms are strong, and I trace the tattoos on his arms, his shirt collar falls down a bit and notice another tattoo on his chest, just under his collarbone, a bird of sorts with the name Mali Koa written in cursive underneath. He catches me looking and smiles "my sister, she's back in Australia right now". I stiffle a laugh, he hears and laughs "let me guess, you're laughing because I said that the tattoo is my sister, heard that one before...you really will fit in well with the boys" I laugh so hard I almost tumble out of his arms, he puts me down and opens the door for me to go into the store. I've never been in the store before and turn to see where the masks are when I see two beautifully delicate masks sitting on the counter, one a black fox, the other a very subtle red cat. Behind them stands an old man, smiling at me, he turns to Cal "are these what you are were envisioning?" I look at Cal who clearly asked for these when he came into the store before bringing me in, "they're perfect, thank you" I reply. Cal walks to the counter and puts his mask on, turning to me he asks what shoe size I am. In confusion I laugh but tell him anyway. He walks behind a wall of witch hats and comes back with a pair of sparkly red heels, I smirk "the wizard of oz?" He replies "that's all they had left in your size, and well you need shoes... I can't carry you everywhere" his smile is cheeky, I feel butterflies flying around in my stomach "well they look ravishing, thank you". We are ushered out of the store so the old man can lock up and go home.
On the sidewalk Cal leans down to put the shoes on me, I stumble a little and hold onto his shoulders for support while he puts them on. When he stands back up I forget how tall he is. He still holds my mask, I spin around for him to tie it for me. Standing close behind me I can hear his breath falter as he fumbles with the thin ribbon, struggling to tie the knot, eventually he gets it but lets his fingers linger in my hair, curls start to form as it dries from the rain, he plays with them. Slowly I turn back around, facing him, he doesn't step back, his hands carres my cheek, holding my chin, I can't look away from his lips-soft and plump, red in anticipation. I stand on my tip toes until our eyes are level. Lifting up his mask, I look deep into his eyes and kiss him. Long and hard, we linger, our breaths mixing, I fall back to my height and he follows my lips, leaning down to kiss me harder, my hands pulling at his soft brown curls, my eyes closed. I feel his heart beat against my chest, he pulls me in tighter...it start to rain. We slowly pull away from each others lips, he still holds me close, I look up into his, rain falling on my face and pull my mask back on, I take his hands from around my waist and lead him to the car... we have a party to go to after all.
