Prologue:
I smiled against the prickly wind, feeling freer than I'd ever felt before. It had taken thirteen years for my dad to let me come with him on an expedition, I'd been begging for years, and now I finally got to learn the same things he learnt at my age. Patience had never been my strong suit so I'd tried other avenues to getting on this boat, begging, negotiation, bribery etc. Dad was on the bridge steering the boat to our faraway destination. We were already in deep water and I could see a storm attacking the water in front of us. I felt a thrill of anticipation as we entered the edge of the storm and the water became wild. I leant against the rail of the boat and it began to jerk side to side as the water pushed against the sides. I could hear Dad's voice yell against the storm.
"Matilda get back inside!" I laughed maniacally as the boat rocked dangerously. I was enjoying this. I clutched the stone that hung around my neck as rain beat against my face. Then the boat gave a sudden, disastrous lurch and before I knew it I was falling over the side. I knew that I should have been scared but it felt more like shock. I could hear dad screaming my name, his voice was so desperate but it was cut off as I was embraced by the cold merciless sea.
Chapter 1:
"Tommy, come in here, I need to talk to you...Thomas!" Great aunt Lynda yelled from down the hall in her study. There was a large painting of an enormous submarine. Well, that's new. Tom thought. He was about to answer when he caught sight of his great aunt's face. She looked anxious about something.
"What's the problem?" Tom asked.
"I will be going away for a while, Tommy dear. My old friend and colleague from the geology company I worked at named Derrick, has invited me on a geology trip for a month or two. Your cousins will be taking care of you." Tom felt like she had punched him in the face, he wasn't going to see her for several months. "I am leaving in a few weeks, my dear, to meet with my geologist friend Derrick. That is all I needed to tell you, deary, you can leave now."
"This isn't fair! You know I don't like my cousins." Tom yelled angrily as he stood up and stormed out. Thomas was distraught and fought off tears as he walked back to his room. The only person who ever had cared about him was his Great Aunt Lynda and now she was going to leave him for a stupid trip with her friend that she had never even mentioned.
A few hours later there was a knock on Thomas' door, "Yes?" He answered with a clearly angry tone.
"Honey, we need to talk about this." She replied.
"There's nothing to talk about. You're leaving me for a friend I don't even know about!" He angrily told her.
With a sigh, she leant against the door.
"Tommy please." She begged, "I know that you're mad but I have good reason to go, just hear me out."
"Fine..." Thomas said as he slowly opened the door. "Explain then." He sat back on his bed and Lynda followed sitting beside him.
"About three years ago Derrick lost his daughter while on a boat trip. Every year he goes out in a submarine and looks for her. This year, he asked me to come along with him. If I lost you I would have done the same and I would want some help from my friends, so you must understand, I have to go. By the way, it's also a geology expedition, Derrick is an expert geologist " She explained with a calm and collected tone.
"Well, I can come! I can help find her too!" Thomas said excitedly.
