The next morning, Steve made me some toast with peanut butter and scrambled eggs. I was sitting at the kitchen table eating and talking to him about random things while he cleaned a pan in the sink, when I heard the familiar whoosh of a certain metal suit approaching. I looked toward the glass sliding door as the red and gold bundle-of-bolts lowered himself to the ground slowly.
"Pray for me." I murmured to Steve before the door slid open.
The mask of the suit retracted first, then the rest of it peeled away from Tony's body. He stepped out and landed in front of me with his arms crossed.
"Howdy neighbour." I greeted him, taking another bite of my toast. I saw Steve lean against the counter in my peripheral vision.
"I... am about this close to losing my—"
I held up my hand and cut Tony off. "Can we skip the lecture?"
"Can we skip the— wha— NO!" He exclaimed, moving his hands around. "Look I know I messed up yesterday but that doesn't mean you can run away in the middle of the night!"
"I didn't run away because if I did you wouldn't have found—"
"No this is where you zip it!" He pinched his fingers in front of my face. I sat back defeatedly. "Cap I'm sorry about all this." He turned to Steve.
Steve straightened up. "No don't worry about it, we had a great talk. She's a good kid." I grinned awkwardly at him. Tony is so embarrassing.
Tony nodded at him. "I'll call you later." He pointed. Steve nodded back.
"Home. Now." Tony ordered.
I threw the crust of my bread down on the plate and stomped outside dramatically, not bothering to thank Steve. I'd text him later. I waited on the back porch, tapping my foot impatiently while Tony said a few parting words to Steve. When he finally came out and closed the door behind him, he pulled a pink metal box out of his pocket and laid it on the ground in front of me.
"You're going to let me use my suit?"
"How else are you going to get home? Come on." He stepped into his suit and it closed around him. He didn't wait for me and flew up.
I pressed my foot onto the box and it began crawling up my leg and surrounded my body. The mask closed over my face, and I was excited to use my suit again. I powered the jets and flew up, following behind Tony who was waiting up for me, but continued flying toward the house once I took off. I struggled to keep up with him but that was probably his plan.
Once we arrived home, I followed him to the ground and we both landed on the driveway. We both retracted our masks and I immediately started walking to the door.
"You can't just keep avoiding me." Tony followed me.
"Watch me."
He grabbed my arm, making the metal clang, and spun me around.
"So-so-so what, that's it? You're going to ignore me for the rest of our lives?"
I avoided eye contact and felt tears begin to prickle my eyes.
"Kid, I am so sorry... for the way I acted on the aircraft. I was shocked— extremely shocked. But... you're still my daughter, you always will be." He got down on one knee so I would have to look at him. He must've noticed my tears because he smiled sadly up at me. "I'm new to this whole Dad thing. Before you, I did this—" he motioned to his suit. "—for fun. Now I have a reason." He paused, and pressed a finger to my chest. "That's you."
"So, you don't care that I'm the niece of the God of Mischief?" I laughed quietly.
He smiled. "Well, it explains your ability to move things with your mind, so at least we know that much. But of course I don't care, you're still the same you I met months ago, and you're the same you now."
I finally let the tears stream down my cheeks.
"Happy tears?" Tony asked worriedly. I nodded and leaned forward, wrapping my arms around his neck.
I heard him sigh of relief, and we let go of each other and headed toward the house.
...
"Do you remember anything? What it was like?" Tony asked, taking another bite of his sandwich.
I shook my head and swallowed. "No... nothing. You could tell me it didn't happen and I'd believe you."
"I could tell you anything and you'd believe me."
I scowled at him. We made grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch and sat across from each other while talking about the whole 'Loki is my freaking uncle' situation.
"He did show me some hologram thingies though," I said.
"Hologram thingies?"
"Yeah he had this little machine, it was like this big," I showed him with the palm of my hand. "And when he pressed a button it would flash up and play a vision of the past. He showed me one of him and my mother, and then one of him and I."
Tony nodded, seeming to be taking in all of the information. Wanting to get off the topic for a while, without looking up from my plate, I raised my hand and began levitating a bowl from the coffee table in the living room. I peered up, keeping my head down, and moved the bowl so it was right above Tony. I flipped it over and slowly placed it down onto his head. He looked up at me and I laughed hysterically, nearly falling off my chair.
Yay! Tony and Victoria finally made up! I'm just as relieved as I'm sure many of you are. Thanks for reading and all of your nice comments, you guys are hilarious.
