Callie's POV

Due to their trusting me with the secret of their peculiarity I felt the need to tell Emma and Bronwyn about my dream. The one I think involved their friends.

But due to the confusion, and their explaining everything to me, I was finding it harder and harder to remember any of what the voices said, or what the sounded like. The one I could remember the best was the first one, the masculine voice whose life and clothes were ruined.

"So um... did any of your masculine loop members pay attention to clothes?"

Emma and Bronwyn's heads shot up towards me.

"Yeah, how did you know about Horace?" Bronwyn asked tilting her head a little, her ratty hair falling to the side slightly.

"Well, after I passed out, I had a dream. Everything was dark but a bunch of unfamiliar voices ranging in age and gender. I don't remember much of what they said except that all of them seemed lost and hurt. I heard your voices too. Just before I woke up."

Emma and Bronwyn exchanged a glance.

"Callie, is there any chance you could be peculiar?" Emma asked carefully.

I was taken aback by this. We're they suggesting that in my dream I was subconsciously using some sort of peculiarity?

"Umm. I don't know. I guess so. I don't think anyone in my family is peculiar." I told them.

"They don't have to be. It is an inherited trait but a family can go several generations before another peculiar is born."

"Okay. Even if I was a peculiar what would my peculiarity even be? All I did was hear people I've never met's voices in my dream." I asked.

Emma was the first to reply. "I don't know. Telepathy perhaps. Callie you need to think. Is there any other time you've heard voices, when someone wasn't speaking. Any other time at all?"

I paused, there was a couple times, when I was younger, close to Bronwyn's age. I would make a game out of it. I'd tell my friends to think of an animal and then I would guess what they were thinking. I always got it right but I'd always it was just luck.

Once my mother saw me do it, and she ridiculed me for it. I'd never tried to play the game after that.

"Well, I suppose there were a couple times when I was about Bronwyn's age when I would guess what my friend's were thinking. But my mother told me not to do it, so I'd never tried after that."

"That qualifies. Listen. I know this is a lot to take in. But of you can telepathically communicate with the other members of our loop, we might be able to find everyone again." Emma said.

I nodded slowly. I could see where Emma was coming from. I still wasn't sure if I actually could do it. But I knew this was the first chance at possibly finding everyone again. Besides if I was peculiar that meant they would take me with them and I would finally have a home.

"Please, we need you to try it again."

It couldn't hurt to at least try.

"Okay. Let's do it." I said.

"Yay!" Bronwyn exclaimed.

I smiled at her, and she smiled back. Even Emma smiled slightly.

"Alright, Callie. I'm going to think of something. Try to focus on finding out what it is I'm thinking of." Emma told me.

"Got it." I replied.

"Are you ready?"

"Yes"

With that I closed my eyes and focused all my energy on Emma and finding out what she was thinking. Just like she said to do.

It was silent for a while with the exception of the radio which was still on in the background.

I thought it wasn't working because nothing like what happened in the dream was happening. But neither Emma and Bronwyn were going to say something until I at least made a guess at what she was thinking.

I took a deep breath and focused harder, this time I focused more on putting my self in Emma's shoes.

I imagined I was alone, with a little girl, separated from everyone and everything I know except the little girl.

"Jacob, I really hope this works, Jacob, you'll get to see Jacob again, no if this is going to work I need to focus on the thing. I need to focus on the cat. Besides my priority is getting everyone together and safe again. But... Jacob"

Emma's voice rang out in my head. I think she was trying. To focus on the cat, Hazel. But it wasn't working.

"Are you thinking about someone named Jacob?" I said as I opened my eyes.

Emma looked at me shocked.

"I was, I was trying to think about the stray cat Hazel, but yeah. I was thinking about Jacob, he's my boyfriend."

I nodded, and smiled.

"Well it might not be what you were trying to get me to guess, but at least now we know I can do it."

Emma and Bronwyn nodded.

"Read my mind next Callie!"

I turned to her. This time it came to me much easier.

"I like the music playing on the radio... I'm hungry..."

I smiled at the little girl.

"You are thinking that you are hungry," I stated and the little girl nodded her head vigorously. "I agree. Let's go finish that cold soup."
