Being the fucking asshole I am, I left the hospital. I should've stayed and prayed for Ariana. I should've stayed and comforted her best friends. I should've stayed and tried to do something.
But I couldn't.
So here I am, numbly making out with my girlfriend while the girl I do have feelings for is fighting for her life.
What the hell is wrong with me?
"Sabrina stop," I blurted, pushing away.
"What- why? I thought you wanted me?" Sabrina protested.
When I had showed up at her apartment all I had said was I wanted her. It's true. I did want her. I wanted her to distract me.
Turns out, her lips weren't that great of a distraction.
"I realized now isn't a good time. Ariana's in the hospital," I said. Sabrina pouts and pulls her shirt back on. I don't even remember taking off her shirt. I don't think I took it off.
"You still love her don't you?" Sabrina demands. Sabrina's mouth twists into a jealous sneer.
I don't love her. I just have very strong feelings for her.
"No I don't."
"I don't believe you. You would be kissing me right now if you didn't love her!" Sabrina pushes.
"Shes nothing to me okay? Drop it." I snapped angrily.
"I'm sorry baby." Sabrina presses her torso against me. Her lips capture mine in a kiss.
I kiss back on instinct but stop and pull away. "Sabrina no. Stop. Now isn't a good time."
"You don't love me. Your stuck on a girl. A girl that doesn't love you. A girl that can't give you what you want. I can." Sabrina says taunting me.
My phone rings. Thank the universe.
I get up and grab my phone. It's Peyton. Peyton and I haven't talked since Ariana and I's break up. Which means she wouldn't call if it wasn't important.
Fuck. It's about Ariana isn't it.
"Is she okay?" I demanded. I didn't bother saying hello to Peyton.
Peyton sniffles. "Get to the hospital, Sam. You'll want to hear this." She hangs up at that.
"Fuck!" I mutter underneath my breath. Sabrina hears it and assumes I'm inviting her to, well, fuck.
"About time you asked, baby!" Sabrina cheered. She wound her arms around my neck and started grinding her hips against me.
"What?" I said in surprise. I pushed away from her.
Sabrina stomped her foot like a child. "Why don't you want me?"
I don't answer her question. Instead I pull my shoes on and walk out of her apartment. As I leave, I call back, "I'm going to the hospital. Don't follow me."
I know I should break up with her. I don't have feelings for her. I can hardly stand her. All she wants from me is sex and making out. She probably just wants me for an added boost to her popularity.
Right now, my priority is Ariana. Sabrina can wait.
I speed to the hospital. I passed stop signs and red lights. Something told me that things might drastically change at the hospital. I need to know what's happening to Ariana.
"Sam! Over here!" Jai calls as I bound into the hospital.
"Someone tell me what the fuck is going on," I demanded.
Peyton nods and gestures for me to sit down in a chair. I ignore it and stay standing. "Well, um," Peyton begins. Her voice catches in her throat and she pauses to wipe at her eyes. I snatch a tissue box from the front desk and toss the box at her.
Jai explains for her. "Ariana's in a coma."
A what?
"Say that again?"
"Ariana's in a coma," Jai repeats. "She's barely alive but her heart is beating and her body is functioning. Her brain is working. She just is-" He trails off, unsure of what to say.
"Asleep," Peyton says sadly.
"A coma," I repeat.
"Yes," Jai nods.
Awake but just asleep. I know I should be happy she's alive. Not everyone would survive a crash like that. I should be grateful. But dammit, I'm not!
I want her to be okay, and alive, and happy, and awake!
