I glared at the girl sitting beside me. She was God awful. I have never in my eight years of life met someone that was such a brat. She always wanted to play with me and Luke. She's a girl! She has cooties! She cannot play with Luke and me. That is not an option.
Mama always said that I had to include her. Apparently, this girl and I had been best friends when we were in diapers. That had all fallen apart in kindergarten when I discovered that girls had cooties. Gross, right?
Ariana Brooks caught sight of me glaring at her and stuck her tongue out at me. I stuck my tongue out at her too, mimicking her. A murderous glint appeared in her dark brown eyes. I sucked in a breath and looked away. The last time I had seen that murderous look in Ariana's eyes, I got seven stitches above my eyebrows.
The chick threw a Lego helicopter at my face!
As my mom came to a stop in front of our elementary school, Ariana immediately jumped out of the car. She yelled a goodbye to my mom before running off to her friends. Her friends? Equally as bratty. Reeked of cooties.
Just as I was about to get out of the car, my mom stopped me. "Jai, honey, please be nice to Ariana. I don't understand why you don't like her."
"Um, Mom. Girls have cooties."
Luke shook his head at me. "Ariana is nice. She has barely any cooties."
"Shut up, Luke!"
My mom just laughed and shook her head. "You won't be thinking that forever, Jai."
"Yeah, I will," I told her honestly. "See ya later, Mom."
I jumped out of the car and Luke followed me. When we walked past Ariana's group of friends, I noticed how loud they were laughing. Except, Ariana wasn't with them anymore. I scanned the crowd for her but I couldn't find her. I shrugged and followed Luke into our third grade teacher's classroom.
Class started and Ariana still wasn't there. When Mrs. Savinski called roll, she wasn't there to say here. Ariana's friends giggled obnoxiously. My friend, Seth, leaned over and whispered into my ear, "You know Sydney McNaran? Best friends with Ariana Brooks? She's so hot."
I jumped back in my seat. "Seth, girls have cooties."
Seth rolled his eyes at me. How he knew how to do that, I wasn't sure. I was still trying to figure it out. "Come on, Jai. Cooties end in second grade."
"Oh."
When it was time for recess, Mrs. Savinski made me stay behind class. Sydney started to "Ooooh", making the rest of the class start doing it. I wanted to be mean and give them the middle finger, I had been practicing doing it, but if I was in trouble then I didn't want to get into more trouble. I'm a smart kid, you know.
Mrs. Savinski smiled at me. "You aren't in trouble, Jai."
"Oh."
"I understand that you are next door neighbors with Ariana Brooks?"
Unfortunately. "Yes I am."
"Did you see her this morning?"
"Yeah, we carpooled."
Mrs. Savinski frowned. "Oh. I'll have to make a phone call home then. She hasn't shown up. Go ahead and go to recess, Jai."
I shrugged and walked off. I stopped by the boy's bathroom, for obvious reason, when I heard someone crying. I frowned and followed the sound to the girl's bathroom. I couldn't go in, I'm not a pervert, but I was still concerned.
"Hey, you okay in there?" I yelled into the bathroom.
The crying immediately stopped. A sniffle sounded before a familiar voice called back, "Go away!"
My jaw dropped. "Ariana?"
The sound of a stall door slamming shut sounded. Within seconds, Ariana stood in front of me. Her eyes were narrowed into a glare. It wasn't very effective, with the tears streaming down her face and all. "Go away, Jai. I don't want to talk to anyone else who hates me."
"Who else hates you?" I asked.
Ariana wiped her nose with her shirt sleeve. "Sydney. She told me I couldn't hang out with her anymore because I wasn't pretty enough."
My jaw dropped again. "Sydney is such a bitch."
Ariana's jaw was the one who dropped this time. "Jai, that's a cuss word! Don't say that!"
"I'm sorry, don't tell Mrs. Savinski or my mom!" I yelped.
Ariana managed a small smile. She held her pinky out. "I pinky promise."
I hooked my pinky with hers before letting go. "Hey, Ariana? Do you wanna play with me, Luke, and Seth today during recess. Since, you know, Sydney said you couldn't with her anymore."
"Yes please," Ariana whispered. Another tear slipped out and she quickly wiped it away.
As Ariana and I walked side by side out to recess, I whispered to her, "I don't hate you, by the way."
"I don't hate you either."
"Wanna be best friends?"
Ariana smiled at me. "Yeah, I do."
"Pinky promise?" I held out my pinky.
Ariana hooked her pinky with mine. "Pinky promise."
