ENDS AND MEANS

"Now what I'm saying is nothing new

This repetition's right on cue

A wise man said you're amused to death

Too much talk, too much wasted breath"

Kongos -Take Me Back

Sam sat down next to the fire and started repeating the Lakota words that Rising Dove had taught him. A soft melody from somewhere outside of the cave accompanied him. He couldn't sing all that well but he could carry a simple tune well enough to count, besides it was the thought and intention behind the words, not the words themselves that mattered. Or at least that's what Coyote had told him. She had called him out of the blue three days after Dean had disappeared. She'd had a dream about what had happened and told him that Rising Dove had had a vision also. Coyote was the one that came up with the idea of using Native magic to help give him a chance to talk to Dean and not the demon that was inside. Sam couldn't trust any angels other than Cas and Cas was fading fast. Sam didn't want to be the reason that Castiel burned out his remaining grace and possibly die any sooner than he had to. Between Coyote's idea and the research he had done he'd cobbled together an insane plan that somehow they had managed to pull off. Sam knew he couldn't do anything that Dean would be able to think of and plan for and figured the more insane the better.

As he chanted and sang small bits of reddish, orange light started drifting into the cave and hovered next to him on the other side of the fire. He felt the words he sang growing in power and volume, the pace of the melody from outside the cave sped up and Sam tried to keep pace. More and more lights floated in and joined the ones that were already there. They started pulsing, matching the rhythm and pace of the song. As more came in the mass of light started flickering faster and brighter and Sam found himself squinting against the amount of light that was filling the cave. His voice grew louder and louder and he swore the shadow of a large bird darkened the cave for the briefest of moments right before the mass of light solidified. The intensity of it almost matched what he had seen when they had banished an angel, then the light was gone and Dean sat next to him.

Dean glanced around, a confused look on his face, their eyes met. "Sam? Your eyes!"

"Yours too." Dean's eyes were still black and Sam assumed from the look on Dean's face his were too. He knew that it was Dean he was talking to though, not the demon, by how Dean looked and moved. That and he was pretty sure the demon wouldn't be able to make it to the Native spirit world.

"Where are we? Are you a demon now too?"

"We're in the Twilight Time and not quite."

Dean stood up and started walking around the cave, checking out all the nooks and crannies. "Twilight Time? Will I sparkle now?"

Sam sighed, "That's how I know it's you talking, not the demon side. Not even a demon could make that bad of a reference."

Dean paused in his investigations and smirked at him, "What can I say? It's a gift."

"We're caught at the exact moment between life and death. I found a spell that froze time in a smalll area around us there and I got some help to bring us here so we could talk.  In the real world I stabbed you with an Angel Blade, shot you full of spell worked bullets and then stabbed myself with Ruby's knife about an inch from my heart. Don't you remember?"

That wiped the smirk off of Dean's face, it was replaced by anger and horror. "Yeah, I remember. You shot me in the back. Your own damn brother!"

Sam tried to stay calm and not get defensive. He had to get through this and get Dean to actually listen for once. "You're a Knight of Hell now. I did what I had to."
