Chapter 4

"Yea... wow.. I'm ok.. I'll be right back.." Was all Maya could manage to say to Bruce when she heard that Pepper.. as her name was.. was Tony's girlfriend.. How could he even stand such a girl?? She thought.. she stood up and walked outside to get some fresh air. How can he even enjoy Pepper's company? She thought.. She sat down on the steps outside Stark tower thinking.. While she was thinking her Arc Reactor, for no reason, started to glow the deep purple once again.. yet she wasn't shape-shifting..

Bruce walked out to where Maya was to see her sitting on the steps staring out into the distance. He went and sat down next to her and she didn't even acknowledge his presence.

"Do you miss them?" He asked Maya, startling her. Maya sighed and just nodded. "Do you know where they are?"

"No.. I've never met them and I sure as hell don't want to go back to my adoptive parents.." Maya stated.

"Why? Were they that bad?" Bruce asked calmingly.

"Yeah.. they didn't love me, they adopted me to be the bigger sister to there five year old and to do chores.. The five year old, Lilly loved to dress me up and do my hair.." Maya shuddered as she spoke. "I was her barbie and their Cinderella.. To be honest, I'd rather be back in foster care." Bruce's face was in shock when he heard about that.

"Wow.." Was all he managed to say.

"Yeah.." Maya replied.

"Did they find out about your mutation?" Bruce asked curiously.

"Maybe? I don't know.. If they did that explains some stuff but I didn't ever transform in front of them or Lilly." Maya said. Bruce just nodded. The air was full of tension and grief. They sat staring out at NYC for a while until Steve came outside.

"Aren't you guys cold?" Steve asked. "It's like 30° out here!"

"Nah. I'm not cold I've been in worse.." Maya replied.

"Ditto." Said Bruce looking at Steve with confusion. "Why Steve?"

"Well... uh.... you guys are wanted inside." Steve stated awkwardly.

"You could've just said that." Maya stood as she spoke and walked inside past Steve and Bruce. She went to the living room where everyone was and stood by herself near the bar.

Bruce and Steve walked in and both sat down on different pieces of furniture. The next thing they knew Tony was speaking. Maya sat down in the back trying to avoid everyone.

"So, I've been thinking. We haven't had anything fun or to bond more lately.... so why not have a New Years party!!" Tony stated, almost shouting.

Everyone, except Maya nodded and started talking about the idea. Pepper wasn't paying attention so Tony walked over to Maya. "Hey.. you didn't nod or anything. What's wrong?" He asked.

"Nothing. I'm fine. And yeah, that sounds great..." Maya said, not really taking much effort to actually listen to him. Tony snapped in her face and she looked over at him startled. "What?" She snapped at him.

"Whoa gosh sorry.." Tony laughed. Maya just rolled her eyes.

"Aww c'mon Maya loosen up!" Tony whined.

"Yea sure.. like that could happen." Maya replied. Tony looked at her confused.

"What's your problem?" Tony questioned, looking at her concerned.

"Nothing Tony, I'm fine." Maya lied as she stood up and walked upstairs.

Pepper walked over to Tony and intertwined their hands.

"What was that about Tony?" She asked innocently. He looked at her and smiled.

"Nothing." Tony lied. "So are you gonna help me plan for the party?"

"Of course!" Pepper replied, smiling as they walked back over to the couches together and talked.

Authors note: Ok so I'm sorry that this updated without an authors note idk what happened lol. Also sorry i haven't updated in a while.. So I'll try to update asap but school starts back up soon and I am still playing softball so it won't be easy but I'll try! Thanks for sticking with the story guys i really appreciate it!
