January 1946; the world is changing as the war continues to rage on, new soldiers enlisting every few minutes. As most men lie and cheat the system in order to enlist their help, families live in fear of the constant attacks and dread of it never ending. Cambridge, although further from London than Finchley, lives sheltered in their ways - rationing food and drafting men that are of age, despite the few that disagree. This is where our story begins, in a squeezed house that belongs to the Scrubb family - nothing to special about it, standing rather blandly in the street. Alberta and her husband Harold aren't exciting people, nor do they have interesting jobs - Harold too sickly to be enlisted in to ongoing battle. However, they are important for they house Sophia Mason and her two best friends - all of whom were left behind as their families travelled to America in the hopes of gaining better life quality. The sixteen year old often dreams of the happiness experienced with her parents and brother, waiting for the day that she is whisked away from the dreadful home in Cambridge. While this seems like a punishment to the girl, it is a blessing in disguise. After all, in the bedroom that resides in the attic of the Scrubb household hangs a painting - one that brings a sense of comfort and peace over one that looks at it. It is because of this painting that this story is told - a story about the return of the youngest Kings and Queens of Old to a world known to the select few as Narnia.
