"I have no memory of such spell." Rufus tells Orga, sitting at the table in the guild hall. He was blatantly ignoring his guild master who was screaming about some bet that he had won. He had participated in no such bet, therefore it did not matter to him.

The lightning god slayer laughed, his voice booming and almost as annoying as Sting and his cries. They were all lunatics, his guild. "That is because it is not magic, Rufus." He leaned on the table, large arms that would make anyone think twice about messing with him. "You have a crush."

A crush?

Rufus had no such memories of a thing. His memory was flawless if he so cared enough to pay attention. He did not associate the weird feelings he had around you with such a word. "I do think that is ridiculous. My memory holds no such thing." He waved his hand slightly, dismissing such a thing.

"Don't be embarrassed. It's nice to see you confused and flustered. You're always so confident and cocky - it's annoying." Orga smirked. "Speaking of memories..."

You walked into the guildhall, your eyes scanning the room. When his eyes met yours, a smile broke out on your face. His own lips twitched, but he restrained himself from actually showing such ridiculous joy. "Rufus!" You walked over to him and Orga, taking a seat next to them. "Will you go on a mission with me?" It was no secret that you liked him. While you would not be described similarly to the Fairy Tail stalker that Gray Fullbuster had, you were open with your feelings.

Granted, the first time you told Rufus of your feelings it had ended with you faking a smile and making some absurd comment about it being okay. He had committed the encounter to memory, for the sight of your quivering bottom lip and glossy eyes struck a feeling inside of him he had not known before.

"Y/n, as my memory serves, the last time we went on a mission together you turned into a flustered mess because the beast turned your clothes to shreds." Rufus replied, nearly letting a sigh escape his lips. He wasn't sure why he remembered that moment so well. Perhaps it was because it was another time a new feeling had been felt.

"But Rufus!" Your cheeks were tinted red, and he wondered why mentioning was so embarrassing for you. "I really need your help!" You pleaded, attempting to give him the puppy eyes. He had those committed to memory as well.

Looking away almost in a bored fashion, Rufus waved you off. "Go find someone else, Y/n." He didn't like the feeling he got in his chest when you were around. It felt dangerous. Perhaps you were poisonous or something. Regardless, he struggled with wanting to be around you and wanting you far away from him.

You sighed, and ignored the sympathetic look that Orga gave you. "Okay, I get it." Why was he so confusing? One moment he is telling you that he needed to accompany you on missions to prevent you from dying and the next he wants you to find someone else. His memory was pretty much perfect so why was he like this?

"Sting-kun!" You began, waving to the guild master who only calmed down slightly. "Will you go on a mission with me?" He looked over at Rufus, as if surprised by your question. What he saw made him smirk.

"Of course, my cute little Y/n!" Wait, what? Cute? He draped an arm over your shoulder and pulled you close. "I will go with you on every mission you go on!" He sent Rogue a wink, then looked to Rufus. The blond mage was staring at him, showing one of the few emotions he ever showed - shock.

"Uh, Sting?" You asked an entire question with those two words.

"Trust me." Sting winked at you and nuzzled your cheek. You gently pushed him away from you. Jealousy was not something that would work on Rufus. Besides, you thought the jealous game was childish.

"Thank you Sting, but that is not necessary. I changed my mind. I am going alone."

Sting took the request paper from you and looked at it, eyes widening. "Are you sure?" He almost looked like he doubted your ability to accomplish the mission. You nodded. Of course you could do it. "Okay then.."

The walk back to the guildhall was painful. You smiled at Yukino, waving the concerned celestial wizard off in a polite fashion. "I am okay. I just need to sleep."

Rufus was casually leaning against the wall. His hand came up to touch his hat. "You got injured." Well duh, was it not obvious? It hadn't been an easy request. But you had completed it regardless. "I have only one memory of you being injured before." You liked him, a lot, but now was not the time.

"Okay, I get it, Rufus. Can I just go rest now?" You took another step past him. It hurt to move too fast.

"I don't like those memories. I do not understand why I keep them when they do not benefit me. Memories of your smile and your laugh. When you look sad because of what I say." He didn't move from his spot. "I apologize for my actions. I have no memories of romantic feelings for anyone. Rogue told me of how to figure such a thing out."

What was he saying? You paused and turned slightly to the sound of his voice. "Are you saying you like me back, Rufus?" You were a little hesitant for the answer. Being rejected twice did not sound fun.

"I... I suppose that I am. I have no mem-"

"Who cares if you don't have memories of something, Rufus? Not everyone knows everything in the world! I'm asking you how you FEEL about me, not your memories of me!" The shout strained your body, tensing and tearing open your wounds further. Hissing, you clenched your teeth.

"I do not know. My mem-er.... Y/n. If I were to say that the feeling I have in my chest right now is suffocating me because I am regretting not going with you to protect you... is that the emotion Orga tells me is a crush?"

The anger on your face softens. You offer a gentle smile. "That is something you should figure out, don't you think? I can't tell you how you feel, Rufus." You let out a sigh. "I should rest. I am in a lot of pain right now. I don't need anymore emotional drainage right now, either."

Rufus watched as you left him, feeling confused. The sight of your back turned towards him resulted in a clenching feeling in his chest. "Wait, Y/n!" He pushed from the wall and grabbed your hand. "I do not want a memory in the future without you in it. Useless memories that are not beneficial to me, that do not provide me advantages over enemies in battle like a new spell... I want to memorize every little detail of your face. Tell me... what does that mean?"

Was that a confession? It was Rufus after all. He was such a strange one. You smile at him and reach up to take his hat, excited when he doesn't stop you. Feeling empowered, you give him a quick kiss on the lips. "That depends. How did that make you feel?"

Stunned only briefly, Rufus studies your face. "I do not like the memory of how short that was. Kiss me again."

A/N: Fuck. Like. I tried. I got the idea to do Rufus but he is so difficult to try to stay in character with. I hope this is okay! I always love to read comments no matter what they may say so please let me know your thoughts!
