It was silent in the car. Sebastian seemed content to focus on the road and I looked out the window. It was autumn now and the leaves were beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow. A few stray leaves scattered the roads and littered the sidewalks. I pulled Sebastian’s leather jacket tighter around my shoulders, my make-shift curtain dress useless against the chill of the weather.
“We’re almost there,” Sebastian said, glancing at me from the corner of his eyes. I nodded in reply, looking down at my lap and fiddling with the Band-Aid on my finger.
A few minutes later, the car parked in a mall parking lot. I unbuckled my seatbelt, opened the door, and was greeted by a rush of cool air. My arms wrapped around me, we entered the mall. I walked straight into the nearest store, not even bothering to read the name of the store, grabbed a t-shirt and a pair of jeans off the rack and headed straight towards the dressing rooms.
Minutes later, I can out wearing a baby blue v-neck and dark straight jeans. I handed the leather jacket back to Sebastian who was leaning against a rack, his hands in his pockets. I grabbed a pair of converse and tied them up, my feet sighing in release from stilettos. I took a purple sweater off a display and slipped it on, turning towards Sebastian with a satisfied face.
“Is that all you want to get?” he asked, after a pause. I glanced around the store and used Control to lift up another v-neck shirt, a pair of jeans, and a white scarf, placing them on the cashier desk and nodded.
“That’ll be $286.99, please,” the cashier said, batting her eyelashes at Sebastian. I rolled my eyes and stuck my hand out, waiting for him to hand me his wallet. Instead, he glanced at me and smirked, leaning over the counter on his elbows.
“Veronica Gonzalez, eh? What a pretty name,” he purred, smothering the cashier with his eyes. she blushed and nodded, tucking a strand of dark brown hair behind her ear. Sebastian reached out, brushing his hand against her cheek and taking hold of her hair.
“So soft,” he murmured, bringing his face closer to hers. She sighed, and for a second, I thought she was going to faint. I cleared my throat, sticking my hands out towards Sebastian for money. He glanced at me and smirked, as if suddenly he just remembered I was standing there.
I mentally sighed. We really needed to get going, Addison still had the talent necklaces and we were nowhere near retrieving them yet.
“C’mon Sebastian, we really need to get going. Necklace thieves, remember?” I asked him, exasperated and exhausted. His smirk faded as he handed me his credit card.
“Thank you,” I said to him with a forced smile, slapping the card on the desk. Veronica shot Sebastian a worried look as she swiped the card across the scanner.
“Thank you for coming, please come again,” she said quietly, handing me the bags. I smiled at her in thanks, feeling slightly guilty for taking out my frustrations on her, especially since she seemed so nice.
We walked in silence and decided to go to a café, coincidentally, The Sunset Café.
“Brings back a bunch of memories,” Sebastian mused, making himself comfy in an armchair in the back corner. I nodded, seating myself in the chair opposite of his. I took out my hoop earrings and pressed the heart on the side of it. A green hue surrounded us as a mini hologram of the globe appeared. We both Blended, Blending in the hologram as well.
“”Just a mini version,” I answered Sebastian’s questioning gaze. Looking back at the hologram, there were now only five red dots. I touched the one closest to the blue dot, us, and the hologram zoomed in.
“Hey, look! Seems there’s a guy who works here as a security guard. We could take him now, if you want,” I asked Sebastian. He nodded slowly in his thoughts.
“Okay, but we need to get the background information on him first so that we’re prepared,” he agreed. I tapped the security guy on the hologram and his profile came up, on the side. There was a picture of him and all his personal information.
“Ryan Hedler, mall security guard, married, and his two talents are Defend, obviously and Blend…” I said, a little bit worried.
“Two against one, plus we both have Defend and Blend so don’t worry about his size. We’ll be ok and this time, we just have to be more careful this time because he’s married, right?” Sebastian spoke up, noticing my worried look. Strangely, he sounded very reassuring and comforting. I cracked a small smile and nodded.
“Well I guess we should go find him now right? It’s lucky that he has Blend because it would be kind of hard to ambush him in a crowded mall,” Sebastian said. I smiled in agreement.
“Okay, well he’s guarding the food court, and you got to hand it to him, a security guard who has Blend is the ideal employee.” I said, adding the last part as a thought. Sebastian chuckled and nodded as I turned off the hologram and put the earring back on.
Strolling through the mall on the way to the food court was fun, actually. Sebastian and I were cracking jokes along the way and there was no hidden tension underneath his eyes. Hard to believe, but he didn’t even smirk at me once! Maybe Veronica got to him. Her nice vibe must have somehow gotten through his guard and entered his heart. I shook my head. Gosh, I’m rambling again. That’s what two weeks with Sebastian can do to you, my conscience said. I sighed in agreement.
“He’s over there,” Sebastian suddenly said. I turned to look where he was pointing but I saw nothing. Blending, I saw that he was leaning against a sushi bar, his eyes sweeping through the food court every once in a while. On instant, a plan formed in my head.
I grabbed Sebastian’s hand in mine and swung it back and forth between us. Looking up at him with an adoring smile, he seemed to catch on to my idea, glancing down at me, returning my smile. I glance down at my talent necklace and took out my scarf, wrapping it around my neck to hide my necklace. Sebastian re-hooked his necklace to the very last chain to that it rested just underneath his shirt, hidden from view. We walked like this, hand in hand, pretending to be a happy couple on our way to the sushi bar. I stood right beside Ryan, pretending to be unaware of his presence at I looked up at the menu, thinking about what I wanted to get.
A minute later, Sebastian squeezed my hand as he used Control to fling clothes out of a nearby store; distracting Ryan while I used Blend and Control hit him on the back of his head with a cleaner’s broom, knocking him out, cold. Immediately, Sebastian Blended too, and he helped me with his Control to lift Ryan up as we carried him out of the mall, barely attracting any attention as most of the people were focused on the clothes that were flying out of the store.
Once were out of the mall, I realized Sebastian’s car only sat two people.
“How are we going to fit him in there?” I asked, staring at his two seated Aston Martin. Sebastian looked at me and grinned mischievously.
“Oh, no,” I shook my head, knowing what he was thinking.
