Chapter 20:

“Baby wake up,” Andy shook me awake. "No," I grumbled. "Ok fine I'm going to battery city without you." Andy sighed. "No I'm up wait for me." I yelped as I jumped to my feet in the cold floor. The morning sun shone through the cracks of the broken boarded up window.

I walked to the black, in surprisingly good shape, dresser. I pulled out my black overalls and KISS shirt. I had the overalls go to my hips and had the top of it rolled and my hips where my belt gun holster secured it tightly. My KISS shirt was slightly faded considering it was my father’s. I laced up my black combat boots.

“Hey the first time I actually met you, you were wearing that.” Andy noticed. “That’s because I only have two outfits.” I smirked. He rolled his eyes as I tied on my masquerade mask. “Hey do you have a mask?” I asked. “Nope,” Andy said popping the P.

“I think I have an old gas-mask you can wear.” I mumbled as I dug through my pile of stuff. I found it handing it to him. He put it on and started breathing heavily.

“Luke I am your father,” Andy said his deep voice. “What?” I raised an eyebrow and he removed it. “Star Wars? You know the movie?” Andy said concerned. “What’s a movie?” I asked. What the hell was he talking about?

“You don’t know what a movie is?” Andy yelled. “No; lower your voice.” I smirked. “Oh my poor child you are so uncultured. Do you even know what DC superheroes are?” Andy asked.

“DC sucks; Marvel is better.” I laughed. “Are you serious! Marvel sucks balls.” Andy yelled. “Oh god how am I in love with someone who likes DC!” I yelped.

“I’m in love with someone who likes Marvel! You’re nasty.” Andy smirked. “Fuck you.” I yelled. “I’d gladly fuck you, but we have to go to Bat city.” Andy chuckled. “You think you’re so clever.” I laughed as we got in the car. “Yes actually.” Andy smiled.

“I love you.” Andy said as he noticed my nervousness. I haven’t been to Battery City since Jett Star. God I miss him like crazy. “I love you too.” I smiled kissing his hand that was intertwined in mine as we passed the faded falling Zone 3 sign.

“So the plan is: we go through the back door of BLI. Get everything we need as quick as possible. Once we’re out and if the Dracs aren’t too hard on our backs we might be able to rob some place or an empty Drac home.” Andy schemed. “We might have more luck with the Drac home to make sure they don’t see a trail on our way out.” I suggested.

“This why we’re partners; you’re the smart one.” Andy smiled. “When we first met I thought that tattoos were called toasters.” I recalled. “Just because you’re uncultured doesn’t make you any less intelligent.” Andy smirked and I rolled my eyes.

“I’m gonna call in Dr. D and tell him we’re going in soon.” I told as we were mid-way through Zone 1. I picked up the transmitter and fiddled with the dials that outputted static until I finally got a signal.

“Hey Dr. D we’re mid-way through Zone 1. This is Agent Adrenilize and Andy we’re planning on robbing the BLI and if we’re not blazing that much of a trail probably a Drac home.” I told. “Okay you know the drill: do it loud, do it proud. Die with you boots tight and your mask on if you have to.” He signaled off.

“I’m scared Andy.” I mumbled as I saw the Batter City welcome sign aloud the horizon. “Hey I’m with you and there’s nothing to be worried about.” Andy told. “We have the guys on watch so if anything goes wrong in there Dr. D will signal them immediately.” Andy comforted.

“I know.” I mumbled. We drove slowly through the empty back roads of Battery City. Once we had pulled into a hidden alley way a block from the BLI HQ Andy had put on his gas-mask.

“I love you.” He said. “I love you too.” I smiled. “Let’s give em’ hell.” Andy smirked as we evacuated the car. We had our blasters in had as we sprinted lightly through the street. As we approached the back entrance I remembered the first time I met Andy.

Andy shot the lock on the door and it flew open. Luckily they don’t keep the back too insanely under security. Five maybe seven Dracs. Andy shot the first couple in the head as they approached the scene. A few laser beams passed my head and I rolled behind a barrel and aimed at one of the Dracs.

Barely missing passed it’s head I reshot and hit it right behind the eyes. I shot the other while it was aiming towards hidden Andy that was behind a pile of boxes.

That was it for the room. We scoured through boxes; found nothing but a few cans of Power Pup. “We can get more later; it’s not worth the weight to carry.” Andy said as we proceeded into the other room. No Dracs were in there luckily.

This room was stacked to the ceiling in loaded boxes. We both gave each other a smile. We swung our duffel bags off our backs. We each started filling them with everything that we could carry. My bag was filled with Power Pup cans, Carbons, and 2 blasters. Andy’s sack had cartons small car parts and two gallons of gas.

                                         Then: boom!

My eyes had lifted slightly open to see Andy and I passed out across from each other on the floor. Toppled by the debris of the collapsed building and boxes around us. All I could do was cough out ash. “A-Andy,” I croaked out due to the amount of smoke in the air. I could barely see him anymore. Only his silhouette; I hovered my hand out to his. Andy grabbed and pulled me closer to his body.

Andy pulled off his gas mask, removed my mask, then placed his mask on my head. His face was covered in soot around the gas-mask line. “Adren.” He coughed out. “No you need it.” I tried to remove it but he moved his bleeding hand out to the back of my head. He hovered over me. I had started to cry.

Andy grabbed black ash with his shaky hand. He started to rub it in my fire like hair turning it temporarily black. “So… when they find you… they won’t think you’re a kill-killjoy.” Andy coughed out. I removed the mask and placed it around his face. “No you need it.” Andy insisted but he was too weak to fight.

“I love you.” I sobbed as I caressed his face gently. My tears clearing the soot and ash from the trail they fell apon. “Don’t say that! We’re going to make it out.” Andy insisted trying to remove the mask. “No; you’ve got an army you need to take care of. Tell the boys I lo-love them.” I grumbled. My arms soon fell as my eyelids felt heavy.

Andy removed the mask and tied it around my head. “You’re not leaving me Adren! Do you understand!” Andy screamed. “I’m so-so tired though.” I mumbled. “No! Stay awake Adren.” Andy yelled. He grabbed my bridal style and stood through the debris. He hobbled out the remains of the building. The back half, the side we were in, was collapsed and consumed with fire that matched my hair. That’s really all I saw before I died…
