after months and months of arguing back and forth between daenerys and herself about going through with this marriage deal that daenerys had wanted, rhaenys couldn't continue to fight it anymore. want daenerys wanted, she received. and nearly two months after daenerys had sent a raven north to the warden of winterfell requesting a marriage between the king in the north and herself, they were finally nearing winterfell. they had spent long hours riding their horses north all the way from dragonstone. rhaenys' thoughts ran wild. she did not know what to expect when they approached the gates of winterfell.
the marriage that her aunt had years ago constantly played in rhaenys' mind. it was not something that she wanted to reference when she thought about what her own marriage would be like to the man she had heard few stories about, jon snow. she often thought about what the ceremony and all that came during and after would look like during her time traveling north.
as the air begins to get a chill to it, they know that they have reached the north, and winterfell isn't too far off. rhaenys has a way of telling when she's nervous. ever since she was a child, rhaenys would bite the corner of her bottom lip. daenerys has always been able to tell when she is nervous. the two women grew up together, and they grew up as sisters even if they are biologically not, and they have treated each other as such. when daenerys saw rhaenys biting at her lip, she put a comforting hand on rhaenys' shoulder.
"why did it have to be me and right now of all time dany?" rhaenys broke the silence that had been between them for a while. she turned to look at daenerys in hopes of any sort of response that would be of any help to her. "you are the only family i have left rhae. i hate to give you away since you've been by my side for my whole life but it shall be best for our blood and what's to come in the war." she responded.
rhaenys turned back. she should have expected it. as she sat on her horse guiding it to winterfell she thought long and hard. viserys sold daenerys off to a barbarian horse lord; the king in the north cannot be that bad. she's even heard rumors that he's quite handsome.
hours had passed and finally after many months of traveling, the gates of winterfell came into view and at that very moment, rhaenys knew that once she took her first steps through the gates her freedom would be gone forever. as they entered the walls they saw what remained of stark family and that they were lined up in the front in what appeared to be in order of age. as the princess dismounted her horse, she looked right to left starting with the youngest stark and moving onward to the eldest, jon.
rhaenys trailed behind daenerys as she began to greet the starks. she approached whom she presumed was jon and the eldest sister. "hello, i am daenerys stormborn of the house targaryen, first of my name, the unburnt, queen of the andals and the first men, khaleesi of the great grass sea, breaker of chains, and mother of dragons. we are pleased to finally meet you all. thank you for answering our call and agreeing to our alliance. i see a great future for us all." daenerys said as jon and sansa stared right at her, "winterfell is yours, your grace." was all sansa said and she continued to stare straight ahead.
rhaenys stood back and watched the entire encounter. she could tell that the starks hadn't taken a liking to how her aunt had introduced herself. rhaenys figured she should finally go up to them and meet them all, seeing as to how they'd all be family soon. she began moving her feet with a real smile on her face. something the people in the north hadn't seen nor experienced in a long time. she went up to rickon first. she leaned down to be closer to his height, "hello little one, it is very nice to meet you. you are a very handsome young man. i am sure you are a very strong knight." she happily said to him. rickon blushed and put his head down as he tried to hide it from not only the princess herself but his siblings as well.
rhaenys shifted to the left, positioning herself in front of the stark in the wheelchair. "hello, you must be bran. i've heard a lot about you from tyrion," she began, her voice warm and welcoming. "i'm truly sorry to hear about your legs." bran looked up at her, a faint smile flickering on his lips. "thank you, rhaenys. i've learned to see the world differently," he replied, his tone calm and thoughtful.
she then moved onto arya who had her head down not wanting to be there to begin with. "i believe you are the one who i am told is a very skilled fighter. i would love to find out who the better archer is between us." arya didn't say anything in response to her but she looked up and gave the princess a little of a smirk.
the princess sidestepped a few more steps to move in front of sansa. "now if i am not mistaken, you must be the sansa that i have heard all about. i have been told many great things about you and the amazing strength you carry." she said with a delighted smile. tyrion loved to talk and rhaenys loved to hear stories. she often asked him what his life had been like in the red keep. she couldn't remember much from her own childhood in the capital but there were a few fond memories that she carried with her. rhaenys could recall running around the castle chasing her cat balerion. playing with her uncle viserys who was very close to her age, her mother and baby brother aegon. but she also remembered the screams and evil sounding laughs that would come from her grandfather.
she was brought back to the present, "i am not sure what you have been told princess but i am unsure if i am worth the praise that you give." sansa said in return, unsure of what the princess could have heard or been told about her. "i would argue that you are very deserving, lady sansa." in which sansa gave a small grin in reply back to rhaenys.
rhaenys then realized she had one last person to meet.
her future husband.
