In the middle of the night, the dragon who Ember saw as her father carried her far out into the forest where not even the light of the moons came through the canopy. On the left side of her face, Ember was completely scorched down to the skin. Once the dragon came to an opening in the trees, he set down the youngling on the grass from his jaws. He took one last look at the child and told her all that was in his empty heart. "I hope somebody comes by, picks you up, and kills you." Then he did an about-face, took to the skies, and returned to his cave where his mate and son were awaiting for his return.
Ember was confused and generally unaffected by what had just happened. A dragonfly came by, and she went chasing after it with no regard to her being abandonded by the only dragon she ever called father.
