Everyone cheered as the Valedictorian finished his speach. Maroon graduation hats lifted off heads and rocketed into the sky. Finally, it was here. It was graduation day.
I made my way through the crowd, towards my family whose faces were plastered with excited smiles. My mom, my dad, and my younger sister greeted me with open arms.
“Eva! Anak ko! ( My child) Congrats!” My mom said, slipping Tagalog words into it. They all pulled back to look at me, smiling from ear to ear.
“Evalyn, I am so proud of you,” my dad said, giving my shoulders a quick shake before my younger sister and I screamed excitedly.
“Oh my gosh Ate! I can’t believe you’re gonna be going to college soon.” She looked up at me.
“I know! I’m so excited. I really can’t wait.” I responded, squeezing her hands, trying to focus all my excitement into them before it ricocheted off my whole body.
“Stai amici venite . Saremo lì .” (You're friends are coming. We'll be over there.) My dad said in Italian. Before they left, they shook my friends’ hands congratulating them before walking over to my teachers.
“Eva!” One of my best friends, Zoe, yelled as she ran to me, pulling me into a tight embrace. We jumped around, screaming. “Finally, both you and Joe graduated. You both are so grown up now!” She shrieked, her face glowing with happiness and pride.
“I know, Zoe, you have no idea how excited I am,” I told her, holding on to her arms.
“Eva, I graduated last year, of course I know how it feels.” She laughed.
“Oh, right,” I said, laughing back.
“Zoe! Eva!” a male voice called to us from the crowd. Looking around, I saw Joe waving at us before making his way to us. When he got to us, he hugged Zoe first.
“Congratulations little bro. Way to go!” She yelled into his ear. The crowd was getting louder, so so did we.
“Thanks Zoe,” he responded before pulling back from his sister and turning to me. “Eva!” he exalted before pulling me into a tight hug.
“Joe!” I screamed back at him, wrapping my arms around him as much as I can. “You gave a great speech.” I told him. He was the Class of 2008’s valedictorian, and I was the salutatorian. Though I wished I could’ve made the speech, I’m glad he did, and it really was a wonderful speech.
“Thanks, Eva. Man, I’m so excited,” he exclaimed as he pulled back from me. “I can’t wait to start my apprenticeship.” He smiled down at me, his hair falling over his eyes. I always found his hair a bit too light for him, but there was nothing to do about it.
I also found it kind of odd how he chose to be a Roof Thatcher for his apprenticeship and as his future job, but he enjoyed it so much.
“I know. I can’t wait to start my internship.” I spoke loudly but calmly. A sense of realism washing over me as I realized that this was it. This was when my career would begin as an anthropologist.
“You know, I never understood why you’d want to work with dead bodies,” Zoe said, her face folding into a disgusted expression.
