 Chapter 5

Jad was restless.

He knew he had to figure out how to solve his issue before Miles made the big announcement to the whole team that morning but no light bulb would light up in his head.  For the first time in his colorful life, being the certified wild guy in the department, he was at a dead end.

He shifted uneasily on his chair, waiting for Miles to talk to the team again, the moment he’d been dreading since the big “explosion” happened in his cubicle.

Miles cleared her throat as she got ready to address her team.

“As you all have learned this morning for which you already have been celebrating, we are all going to Boracay this weekend as approved by management.  Yoohoo!!!!”

The entire team clapped their hands while some whistled and pounded on the table excitedly.  Jad joined the festive reception by doing his so-called “Dance of Jad” to mask his anxiety.

When everyone calmed down, Miles resumed her speech.

Boracay is the best beach in the Philippines right now and management felt that we deserve the vacation for all the hard work that we put into our role as support group to our Sales and Merchandising team.  All expenses will be paid and they will give us each some pocket money for shopping and for other personal needs. We will go with the cast and crew of Happy Gang at the Kanto because they have a promo tour and we’re all riding in their package.  So it will be a fun and star-studded trip.  I know none of you are into mga artista except for Chie here but hey, it will be an experience.”

Chie made a funny face and everyone broke into laughter.  Miles paused after a hearty laugh and then continued with a more serious tone.

“But, there’s a big BUT, guys.  We will not leave the office today until all our requirements and reports are done.  I want everyone to hand me their reports at 2pm today so you can all go home early to pack.  If you have issues, please come to my office.  Other than that, hand me your reports and I’ll see you at the airport in the morning.  Meeting adjourned.  Babush!”

Jad was the last one to leave the conference room.

He needed to think.

He glanced at the tinted glass on the wall and decided to go to his quiet place – the FGD observation room on the other side of the conference room.  Maybe he would come up with something brilliant before the cast and crew of Happy Gang at the Kanto invade his private space.  It was only 8:45am.  He still had plenty of time to figure out how to solve his problem.

Jad headed to the FGD observation room and opened the door hastily.  As he stepped inside the dimly lit room, a shadowy figure with big round “blazing” eyes suddenly appeared in front of him.

Before Jad could scream and cause another commotion, Bobby switched on the lights hoping Jad would recognize him.

“Sir Jad.  It’s just me, sir.  Si Bobby po, sir.”

The frozen Jad began to thaw out.  He smiled broadly and then laughed, relieved.

“Dude, you scared the crap out of me.  Okay lang.  Okay na’ko.”

When Bobby recovered from his own shock, he started collecting his tools to head out the door when all of a sudden, Jad slumped down and whimpered softly in a corner.

“Sir, are you okay?”

“I’m doomed pare.  They’re all gonna hate me.” Jad said in between sobs.

“Sir, what happened po?” Bobby asked.

Jad looked at him with burning red eyes as he spoke.

“I lost the file that we need to submit today.  My PC rebooted when I accidentally unplugged it when I turned on my radio.  That was the explosive sound this morning.  It’s lost in cyberspace.    We can’t go to Boracay, to the beach, without that file.”

Bobby looked at Jad intently, he could feel his neurons swimming in his brain, all excited to probe in the matrix of Jad’s computer, anxious to retrieve the lost file.

Bobby sighed.  He wanted to help but there was one big problem.

How could he convince Jad to trust him?
