Chapter 13
Bobby woke up disoriented.
His eyes were wide open but his body was stuck in the bed, unable to move. He could hear the repetitive sound of a xylophone gone crazy but his brain would not let his arm reach for his alarm clock on the bedside table to turn it off.
He looked at the time. It was 5 o’clock in the morning.
He clearly under slept having gone to bed just a few hours earlier from cleaning the whole house, making dinner for his family and chatting on the phone with his friends.
He forced himself to sit up, grabbed the tiny alarm clock and turned it off before the entire family compound and the whole neighborhood woke up.
It was Saturday.
Everyone wanted to sleep in on weekends including him.
But not today.
He glanced at his gym bag in the corner, stout from his weekend paraphernalia, all packed and ready to go.
All of a sudden, panic struck him again.
He almost fell on the floor as he tried to leap across the room to check his plane tickets to Boracay. He knelt down next to the gym bag and unzipped the side pockets hoping they were still there. Bobby rubbed his aching arms as the tickets peeked out from the bag’s pocket.
His flight was not until 8:30am that day but he wanted to beat the early morning traffic. He stood up and headed to the bathroom to take a quick shower and get dressed.
Before setting out half an hour later, Bobby stopped by his Nanay’s bedroom to let her know he was leaving but her room was empty.
He then took a peek inside his sisters’ room to check on his younger siblings. They were still asleep.
He wanted to say goodbye to them, especially to Garrett whom he entrusted his Game Boy, CD collection and CD player, but he didn’t have the heart to wake them up so early. He picked up Garrett’s blanket on the floor, shaking it gently before covering his sister with the sheet.
Bobby headed out after turning the lamp off in the bedroom and closing the door gently behind him.
When he reached the living room, he heard his Nanay running from the kitchen with a small Tupperware in tow. She put it inside a Zip Lock bag and handed it to Bobby.
“Eto ang favorite sandwich mo. Dalawa yan. Mag-breakfast ka on your way sa field trip. Take care, anak. Send me a message every hour, okay? Enjoy your field trip in Tagaytay with your classmates. Sige na. Nandyan na ang sundo mo sa labas.”
His mother handed him the Tupperware filled with his favorite sandwiches so he can have breakfast on his way to his feld trip destination. She asked him to send her an update on his status every hour while he was in Tagaytay with his classmates from school. She told him to take care and hurry up so he could get inside the car waiting for him outside.
Bobby’s mother seemed fazed but Bobby knew how strong and sharp she was.
Maybe she knew he lied to her about his supposed school-sponsored trip and was already scheming on how to punish him but Bobby would deal with that when he came back from Boracay.
He felt bad for lying to the most important woman in his life, his mother, who trusted him so much but he was willing to face the consequences.
It was his dream to be a part of the TV sitcom that he had followed for more than a year now. There was no turning back.
He gave his mother a hug before getting inside the car waiting for him outside.
Inside the car, he saw his four best friends still in their sleep clothes, yawning.
They all agreed to be Bobby’s accessories to his “crime” to make his story believable and convince his Nanay to let him spend the weekend away from home.
“This better be worth it.”
Bobby mumbled as he fastened his seatbelt.
