Chapter 16

The famous Boracay, located in the Western Visayas, is one of the best beaches and tourist destinations in the world.

White Beach, the long stretch of white sands and coral blue waters, is one of the main tourism sections of Boracay where commercial establishments including hotels and restaurants are located.

The beach is divided into three stations.

Station 1 has the pricier, more luxurious hotels and restaurants and is known to be the least crowded.

Station 2 is THE party place to many – read: throw your watch in the water, get drunk and be merry like there’s no tomorrow.  This part of the beach is usually crowded especially during the summer when special events for beach patrons are aplenty.  More often than not, these events created specifically for the so-called “party people in the haus” have media coverage.

Station 3 offers the cheapest accommodations. Of course, with the cheaper rates, this section of the beach can get pretty packed with locals and tourists.

The cast and crew of Happy Gang at the Kanto were booked in Station 1 on their first day at the beach.  They had to shoot 2 summer-themed episodes and some clips for their show’s broadcast for the whole month of May and the less-crowded part of the beach was ideal for production.  Tristan did not want a crowd of curious people milling around the set.

On Sunday, Day 2, the cast and crew would move to Station 2 to join the rest of the Channel 17 team - including Bobby and the Marketing-Research and Business Development department - for a much needed R&R  (rest and relaxation) time.

After traveling from the airport to the sea port for two hours, Bobby and the group boarded ferries and boats to get to their respective stations.  They were all provided life vests for the entire 20 minute ride.

From the corner of his eye, Bobby saw Jelly Anne sitting poised in a separate ferry, one half of her face covered with a flowery scarf and the other half with her huge sun glasses.  Tristan, on the other hand, sat quietly a few feet from the actress in one corner.  He smiled broadly, waving his arms animatedly at Bobby and his companions in the boat when their ferry passed by.

As soon as Bobby’s group’s boat docked on Station 2, everyone including the grumpy ones during the two-hour van ride to the seaport seemed to have changed moods.

Radiating with positive vibes and a happy attitude, even the delicate Val who quickly stashed her hand sanitizer in her tote bag was drawn to the beauty of mid-afternoon Boracay.

Bobby was stoked.

It was his first time to visit Boracay.

Those people who raved about the beach were not lying at all.  Boracay was like heaven on Earth, a paradise for mortals.

Bobby inhaled the clean breeze, soaked his bare feet in the white, fine sand and basked in the glorious sun.  The effect was a mixture of emotions – one boosted his energy, another lulled him to sleep.

“Bobby, can you help me carry my bag, please?”

Bobby turned around.

Chie was walking like a hunchback, trying to carry her numerous bags with her frail arms.  Bobby quickly took most of her load and carried some on his shoulders.

“Thank you.  I’m so glad you came.” Chie smiled sweetly at Bobby as she tried to keep up with his pace.

“No ma’am.  Thanks for taking me here with you all.”  Bobby responded sincerely.

After walking a few feet from the beach, Bobby heard a whistle.  He looked around for anyone drowning in the beach.  The whistle sounded like that of a lifeguard’s.

The whistle blew again.  Three times.  At that point, it seemed closer and more annoying.

Bobby looked behind his shoulder.

“Everybody stop!”

Chie’s voice was hoarse but strong as she held the bright orange whistle in her mouth, arms outstretched, like an eagle spreading its wings before a hunt.
