"Luca" she threw herself into him, he barley managed to catch her before they toppled over. She hadn't meant to pounce on him, but she was relieved - relieved it wasn't a creature trying to kill her and relieved he was ok.As he pulled away, he clocked the state of her, his eyes drifting up the muddy stains on her clothing before locking on the metal box behind her.
She followed his gaze towards the box, "make a pit stop?" He asked as he walked into the room, kicking the door shut behind him.
"It's my go-bag."
"It's a box." He countered as he walked towards the bed.
"Same difference."
He smirked as he turned his head towards her, "It's really not."
She silenced him with a wave of her hand, "whatever, box-bag, it's what I need to disappear."
He paused by the bed, hand hovering in mid-air. "What's in it?" He asked innocently as his hand moved towards it.
"Don't touch it." She snapped, stalking towards him and yanking his hand away. He was surprised, hurt even. Her cheeks flushed, her stomach tightening in guilt. "It's protected, spell protected. It'll kill you." She murmured, her hand still on his.
His other hand raised to hers and lightly stroked the back of her hand, "I know you're a very powerful Wiccan."
Jenny bit her tongue, violence flashing through her soul. She knew this tone of voice well, patronising son-of-a-b-
"...But I'm a very powerful demon, you're little spells won't harm me." He smiled, knowing he'd annoyed her but believing his words to be true. As he dropped her hand and went to move towards it, part of her considered letting him touch it and watching him die.
"It was a gift. From him."
That made him pause. Slowly his hands dropped to his sides, "your ex?" He checked, his jaw tightening when she nodded. "Are you ever going to tell me who he is? Other than some powerful creature of hell? By-the-devil Jenny, if you would only tell me his name."
She bit her lip, trying to stop her smile. If only he knew that the lord who's name he just took in vain, was the very beast she spoke of, but some secrets were better left forgotten. He'd asked numerous times over the years, though she'd never told him the truth. Her identity was her biggest secret, if someone knew that the Devil's ex-wife was alive, let alone on earth - well, her peace wouldn't last long.
"It doesn't matter. He's history." She whispered, closing the gap between them. "Seems to me like someone's jealous - and earlier I'm sure I saw a flicker of worry go through those eyes of yours, Luca. It's almost as if you care about me." She trailed a finger along his jaw and down his neck, resting just below his Adam's apple. She felt him gulp, but to her surprise rather than pull her closer and have his wicked way with her, which had happened so many times before, he pushed her back and sighed, irritation colouring his voice.
"Jenny." He snapped, "you don't get it, do you? Of course I'm concerned, we're in danger - more danger than you've ever been in before."
She went to scoff, but as he glanced around the room as though to check they were safe, she realised how nervous he was. "What's going on, Luca? You're beginning to worry me."
"Good," he gripped her arms tightly, shaking her back and forth, "I want you to be worried, I want you to realise that this isn't a game. I never should have come to you, because now you're in as much danger as I am."
"Tell me what's going on," she insisted, "I can help."
"I don't think you can. Not anymore." He released her arms and sat on the edge of the bed, the old mattress dipping beneath his weight. He rested his head in his arms, his hands gripping his hair.
Hesitantly, Jenny sat down beside him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "Tell me what's going on." She urged.
Just as she thought she'd never get through to him, he looked up. His eyes were younger than she'd ever seen them, his normal look of mischief gone and replaced by a hot, white fear.
"There's a rebellion, in hell. They intend to overthrow the devil and end the brother's rule. I was asked to help stop the rebellion before it went any further, but it's so much higher than any of us realised. I started asking questions and the wrong person must have heard me, they know I'm against them and they know I've reached out to you and a couple of other contacts. So now they're trying to shut me up before I can tell my superiors what I know. Yours wasn't the only house that was burned down. Two of my others contact are dead. All because I saw something I shouldn't."
"What do you know?" She probed, confused.
"They thought the rebellion had started in the lower ranks and spread up, but it's not true. The rumour is that there's a third brother, one who was confined in heaven until recently," he wasn't wrong, she of all people knew that because it was Jenny who had helped them lock him up.
"...he's teamed up with the devil's wife and they're planning to wipe out the world and start again."
Anger gripped her stomach, 'wife'. That bastard had taken another wife!
