"Will you shut him up?" Luca gasped, eyes wide and panicked as he scanned the hallway outside.
"I'm trying!" Jenny snapped back as she tried to reason with the man, but he wasn't quite awake, not quite dead, and really was interested in listening to her.
With a growl, Jenny used her magic to steal his voice. Darkness coiled in her gut and worked its way up her chest. The blood magic had taken its toll, it had released the darkness she'd kept contained and Jenny was drowning – drowning in its promise of power, drowning in the darkness, but she needed to hang on, needed to find out the truth.
Her only salvation, the only thing that would stop her darkness from killing them all, was the drain on her magic. This spell required a lot of magic in one go. She would not be able to keep him alive for long. Not without risking her life.
"Listen to me," she demanded of the man, who grabbed at his throat, willing his voice back, "you are dead. I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about that. But I need to know who killed you? Who did this?"
His nails dug into the greying skin of his neck, digging into the flesh until blood began to run slowly along his skin. "Luca help me," Jenny begged as she pulled his hands away and tried once again, "Listen to me...please."
Luca paled as he stood beside her and grabbed at the man's hands, holding him down. "Jack, right? Jack? That's your name, isn't it?" The man's wide eyes turned to Luca, questioning and fearful.
Jenny's stomach rolled with the guilt of bringing him back, of disturbing his soul. Another part of her whispered to complete the spell, to try to bring him back in demon form. Jenny knew that was beyond even her limitations, and would no doubt kill them all.
The man calmed slightly at his name, Luca sighed in relief. "Jack, we need to know how you died. I'm trying to stop the devil's wife, I'm trying to save them."
Jack's face cleared, as if he was grounded by the mention of the secrets he knew. Jenny returned his voice, happy he could be trusted.
His lips began to form shapes, as he tried to speak. Luca leant towards him, "please, Jack. Help us."
"B-B-B...." Jack stuttered, eyes wide and searching as though seeing more than just them. "B-B-B-B-...Bridges..." His cracked, wispy voice said.
Luca glanced at Jenny, neither understanding what he meant. A flash of pain through Jenny's head distracted her, and she grimaced as the spell began to consume the last of her power.
"Not where, who?" Luca urged, "Who did it?" Desperation coloured his tone.
"Luca...he might be too far gone. He might not even know." Jenny reasoned, as pain lanced through her chest. This was taking too long. It was draining her of all of her power. "Luca, we should cut the connection, it's too much, I can't-"
"B-B-B-B-B-Bridges..." Jack whispered again.
Jenny gasped out in pain as she fell to one knee, holding herself up with a white knuckle grip on the cool metal table. She reached out for the blessed blade, hoping to remove it from his chest to end the spell, but Luca pushed her hand away. "Not yet," he barked.
Jenny grunted with effort as a sweat broke out on her forehead. Pain seized her chest and she coughed, bringing up a black bile. Her vision began to swim and she knew she didn't have long.
"B-B-B-B-B-Bridges..."
With one final push of effort, she reached up and gripped the handle of the blessed blade and with one almighty tug, she dislodged the blade from his chest.
"...Henry Bridgets," he stammered as fell back down to the table, stone dead.
Jenny collapsed to the floor as a wind rushed through her body, raising her from the ground before throwing her back down again. The candles went out instantly, leaving them once more in darkness.
