Gene's POV

"Just you be good to her . . . now that she's having your baby, man . . . !"

I followed my best friend to his car, I just felt I needed to say a few words to Sam.

"Yeah! Yeah! I know, I love my girl man . . . it's just that . . . this was all so unexpected, we didn't plan it . . . !"

"You should have taken precautions . . . "

"You know very well that we did . . . !!!" He protested.

"Oh well . . . perhaps accidents do happen my friend . . . and let's just hope this happened for a reason!"

"I just do hope so dude! Now I'm off man or, you gonna have my hide . . . !"

I just nodded at him and waved him off.

Sam and I go way back to our senior year in high school. We were both new in New York.

After getting a promotion in his job, Sam's father petitioned his whole family to come to America.

So both of us were new to New York, and both of us were transferees on the same school.

I was still feeling my way around the campus, and without friends. Not that it mattered to me whether I belonged or not. It was just that I really was finding the students so different from those I left behind.

Adjusting to a new environment, I thought was nothing much of a challenge, but that was easier said than done.

Thus I gravitated to this other new student who sat next to me in almost all my subjects who, with his unassuming demeanor, Sam seemed to be the one who always got bullied.

And I just cannot turn a blind eye on him from the first time I felt he would be facing a losing game with hard core bullies.

We both took the last two seats in the last row at the back. I came right after the bell rang, Sam came in a bit later. It was our first day in school.

Then three male students came in and occupied the seats alongside us, they made the girls who were seated with us vacate their seats.

The boy nearest to us took a long look at our direction, kind of inspecting us. I wasn't for instigating a fight so I avoided his eyes, but Sam . . . who perhaps was quite fascinated by their rude and arrogant ways couldn't take his eyes off him.

"Hey, you don't look at us in the eyes, got that . . . ?"

I would have wanted dearly to intervene . . . maybe I could have said something, but thought otherwise. This was none of business!

Sam slowly nodded his head, flabbergasted!

Now I feared for this guy beside me. He really allowed people to get the better of him. I had a feeling this wasn't the end. He met one group of the bullies in school as I was sure there were others around. I just felt bad for this boy, he was in for a real difficult this school year.

His friends looked at Sam too, then at me. I felt their eyes on me, goosebumps started to rise on my skin and, I didn't like it.

I turned my head 45° to my left, past the black boy and met their eyes . . . without blinking, stared back at two sets of soulless blue eyes. One of them smiled, not at me!
