The lane markers merge into a constant blurry line as he stares unfocused at the tarmac. It's a journey with roots but no ending. Lines peel apart as the car slows down, reverting back to the evenly spaced demarcations. The lines that set apart the different lanes, different cars, different people with separate lives.

Green.

With no destination in mind, he sets off again, a marker indicates a possible left turn ahead. He slows, unsure of the path. He turns left. It's a back lane that winds through a clearing and past sunny pastures. He slows again, taking in the view, enjoying the moment. Eventually, nature tapers off and he finds myself on a ramp to the highway. One after another, cars speed by.

Squaring his shoulders, he joins in.

The lane markers blur into an unending stream again. Surrounded by others, he zones out and drives on.

He looks up,

It is dusk, the road around is clear-except for a lone vehicle visible in the rear view mirror. On the desolate highway, they accompany each other, driving for hours into the night. Without warning, it follows its own marker and turns off the road. He feels a twinge of sadness. For that briefest of miles, they had the company of each other. Through the side mirror, he watches the tail lights fade into the distance.

Alone again, tracing tracks unending; the glare of lit lamps get trapped in his eyes, pooling in the lifeless void.

He cruises, the majesty of the moon-lit road not lost on him. Another exit ramp approaches, he turns off. This road goes on for a while and leads to a dead end. He reverses and gets back on the highway. What is he driving for, where is his destination?

In that moment, nostalgic sadness washes over, almost tangible.

Another car joins him, he nods, to the driver and settles into a tailing position - Together, they burn the miles. Far off in the distance, the sky is turning. Tiny trails of light creep over the horizon. He notices he is back to where he first started.

Somewhere in the back of his mind he wonders, when did the ending start and where did the beginning end?
