Honestly, Steve had gotten used to it. The teasing, from Tony, about his accidental slip in that snowy forest. The pestering, from Natasha, about finding someone and settling down. The --surprising at first-- request from Clint, to help him chop wood for the winter. The retorts, from Sam, after passing him on their runs.
What he hadn't gotten used to was the fact that he had Bucky back. He had Buck back. It was 2018 and he had his best friend back. He also wasn't used to the amount of affection Bucky was giving him. All the little cheek kisses as Bucky moved around in the kitchen, cooking dinner. The flirtatious winks as Bucky posed for his drawing. The ass-grabbing in the middle of the grocery store as he shot glares at the other customers who were obviously interested in the blond.
He couldn't deny, however, how happy it made him. Finally being able to show his true feelings for the brunet. He'd leave little notes everywhere for Bucky. Some of them with simple little messages like, 'I love you', or 'Have a good day, babe'. Some of them purely with little drawings. All of them signed with a simple 'SR' and a heart.
The freedom to express himself truly was so foreign to him. He was so used to hiding everything, unable to tell Bucky how he felt. Sam and Natasha helped him get used to it; they told him about Pride events, how huge groups of people would come together. One day, when he came back from a run, he found a bisexual flag on his bed. He hung it on his door, grinning widely every time he saw the pink, purple, and blue fabric. Upon discovering Bucky being alive, he came out publicly, not just to the Avengers. June 3rd, 2016, wearing his flag as a cape as he held Bucky's hand and his head high and proud.
Steve bought a ring. He hid it in his studio, between paints and canvases. He was waiting. He was waiting for the perfect time to ask the biggest, most important question of his life.
Bucky bought a ring too. He hid it in the kitchen, on top of the fridge in the very back. He planned to ask Steve today. That's all. Nothing special, just ask him when he got home, after they ate dinner. Before they were gonna go to bed, he planned to ask Steve the biggest, most important question of his life.
They both asked at the same time. Both of them dropped to one knee, holding up a tiny black box with a delicate and intricately designed ring inside. Spoke the four words at the same time.
