As Rin muttered the words of the spell, Kody and Shane charged.

Betty managed to dodge Kody's slash and parry Shane's blades.

She pushed them off with surprising strength.

They were thrown backwards, but came back up on both of their feet.

"You know what's funny?" Betty asked as she dodged again. "Nobody would've died if you had no doubt."

"Doubts about killing you? We have none of those. We've been trying kill you since day one." Shane hissed, his eyes full of hatred.

"I'm sure that's true." Betty cooed. "But the doubt I speak of is different."

She once more tried to kill Kody with a swift swing of her scythe.

"Save us the chit-chat!" Kody yelled while struggling to keep the tip of the scythe from killing him instantly.

"You see," Betty continued, disregarding Kody's words. "My purpose is to ensure that there will never be peace between humans and monsters."

At these words, the three of them froze. Rin stopped mid-sentence. Kody almost dropped his Rapier. Shane's arms wavered.

Seeing that she succesfully got their attention, Betty ceased her fighting as well.

For a moment, they remained still.

"I only exist if there is anything that obstructs my purpose. And I came into existence the moment I felt your doubts."

She looked them dead in the eyes, with pink, lifeless ones.

"I know you want to free them." she sneered.

"Preposterous!" Rin screamed, unable to take it any longer. "The war has been won. Ten years ago. We've put it behind us. We've come to the agreement to never free them."

Betty raised an eyebrow at her.

"Do you truly believe the war has been won? Do you know why I killed Roy? Why he had to be the first to die? Because he had doubt. He regretted the war. He regretted having ever been a part of it. He wanted to free them and see his friends again."

The thought of Asgore, Gaster and Kanashi sent a pang of guilt through the wizards. Memories of of smiles and arguments flashed through their eyes, making them feel as vulnerable as ever.

Betty gave a triumphant smile at the sight of their conflicted faces.

"I had to kill him since he was a prince. A wizard. A person with great authority. He could easily persuade the humans to set the monsters free. Then I sensed your doubt too. And since all of you have similar status, I'm going to have to get rid of you... unless..."

They held their breath in anticipation.

"You could swear to never release the monsters."

They were terribly conflicted. They wouldn't dare admit it, but they actually do have regrets about the war. They still do care about their friends who now dwell under the mountain. It was unfair that they get to stay in their prison forever.

They weren't sure if they could trust Betty. What if she broke her promise?

The monsters might have done something wrong, but don't they deserve a second chance?

Mistakes. Conscience. These are things that make them human.

Monsters are technically the same. The only thing that sets them apart is what's on the outside.
