He finally woke up to the sight of a girl with dark brown hair, wearing a black dress and hat.
"Where am I? And what are you doing here, Angie?"
"You are on the surgical floor because you broke your leg very badly and your ribs were also broken, threatening to puncture your lung. As for your second question, you've always been my friend, so I wanted to come."
"Thanks. Her funeral was today?" He said looking at her attire. "How was it?"
"Good, well, as good as one of those can be. She would have wanted you there, but she would have killed me if I did not let you heal first," she said with a slight smile. There was a short silence before she said, "The morning of the day she died, we were in her room and I mentioned that whenever she brought you over and my friends were over, all they would talk about was you," she chuckled at this. "She then said that they had good taste because you were the best guy she knew. I then asked her if she will ever date you and she admitted that she loved you for the longest time. I have always wanted that..." she trailed off.
Dmitri then reached over to where she sat beside him and held her hand as he said, "I loved her too, still do."
"Why didn't you tell her?"
"I always thought that if I did and things went sour, I would lose my best friend. It seems so dumb now; I mean it would have worked because we were friends, right?"
Angie nodded in reply as she said, "Everyone wishes to be with their best friend."
After a few hours of talking and laughing, Angie hugged him and said her goodbyes. The following days came and went with friends and family visiting, crying, and expressing their condolences. Soon the days turned into weeks and after three long weeks, he was out of the hospital with a walking cast and an appointment for physical therapy the following week. He stared at his room's ceiling as he thought about everything that has happened. What was he going to do now? Not wanting to stay in his room, he headed to Lex's house.
"Hey Dmitri," she said when he came through her door.
"Hey, How was Cali?" he asked
"Good, until what happened. I am so sorry," she said
"Why are you apologizing; she was your friend too."
"But you lost more than that. I know you two loved each other, even though you both were too stubborn to admit it."
"How can you possibly know that?"
She then took out her phone and showed him the picture she took the night it all happened, but it was not the picture he expected. "Yo-you took a picture of the dance?" He asked hesitantly.
"Yeah, it was the perfect moment. I mean you guys were so involved in your little world that you did not even notice. It happens often, but it's just so natural for you guys that you don't notice. I wish you guys had gotten together; I really do. It's just that you saw the love between you guys and it was... magical."
"It felt like it ..." he trailed off as tears started to form in his eyes. "I miss her", he whispered as Lex went to hug him. His shoulders shuddered as he started to completely break down in Lex's arms.
