Chapter Eleven: No One Word Answers.
"Can we talk?" My so called friend quickly made herself scarce probably to go see her boyfriend Ben. She assured me that they weren't anything but I'm great at guessing when somebody is lying and even there wasn't anything there would surely be sooner or later.
I was thinking about just running back out the door but I definitely wasn't a coward.
"Sure." We walked into one of the guest bedrooms that this fancy house had. It was plain but had a couch and a bed. I took the bed and he sat on the couch.
He got up and walked across the room towards the door and closed it and went back to the couch.
"I don't bite Chip." I smiled at him as soon as he had heard me say his nickname I had made up. He laughed but never less got up and sat on the opposite end of the bed. I folded my legs as I waited for him to 'talk'.
Seconds passed and I figured he wasn't going to say anything so I started this talk that we were supposed to be having.
"You've changed Chip. When I saw the bracelet I was almost convinced that it couldn't be you but then I really looked at you and I could tell from your eyes that you were that same scrawny lanky kid from primary. Why didn't you say something?"
He looked up at me. "You up and left me I figured that you'd forget me anyways if it was so easy to leave ya know."
Really? Is that what he really thought of me?
"I had no choice. It wasn't a decision that I could make, if I could go back then I'd throw some tantrum just to stay. You were my best friend Chace and hopefully will still be," I didn't know what else to say, "I'm sorry I ditched."
"You look different Summ. I knew it was you, the same chubby girl that beat that kid up only even more beautiful than ever. I almost was shocked at first thinking to myself how could she be here out of all places in the world."
"So tell me whats happened in the last ten or so years."
I proceeded to tell him about traveling with my dad around the world, doing charity work and my experiences that have impacted my life.
"Ant said how you live here now. Can I ask where your Dad is?"
That was the hard part.
"He died a couple of months ago, I moved here because auntie jean was the only family that was nice to me. Only to find out that I have an annoying ass cousin and one that is serving in the Army that I won't get to meet till Christmas."
"Sucks to hear, sorry for your loss." He went quiet all of a sudden.
"What about your family? I never got to meet them ever." He started daydreaming and walked over to the window that overlooked some trees.
"Chace talk to me." He walked back and sat down next to me on the bed.
"My dad was driving mom was in the passenger seat, we were going to a church camp that was like two hours away. This was a year after you had left. I was playing with Trish my one year old sister and next thing you know a car had swerved onto our lane my dad tried to stop but this was close to the cliff and it was too late," his hands were shaking so I held onto his hard just to let him know I was here, "the dude was drunk apparently. You know its so fast how one minute your okay and the next your whole world just comes tumbling down in a matter of seconds."
A teardrop fell onto his cheek as I lifted up my finger and wiped it away. I can't begin to imagine what it was like and to be the only one that survived was probably one of the hardest things ever. But I am grateful for sure. I pull the side of his tee shirt towards me and hug him. He holds me just as tightly.
