"Hey, pretty lady, how 'bout another cup of coffee?"

I laughed, flattening out the white waist apron that was tied over my cotton pastel pink waitress get up. "Gary, settle. I'll get to you in one second, okay?" I flashed him a dazzling smile as I worked my way to the front while giving a table salt that they asked for, another water fill ups and give another table their check.

"Love ya, toots," He called, making me smile as I approached a man in a baseball cap and his head down.

"Welcome to Pattie's, how ya doin' today, sir?" When I approached him, he looked up. Dear God, he was handsome.

Holy shit, it's Captain America. Okay, okay, okay, don't freak out. Don't make him feel weird, just go with the flow.

"Little rough, but I heard the best pie in town will make my day better." A corner of his mouth twitched up and a soft smile turned up my mouth.

"I can agree to what you've heard." I motioned for him to follow and had him sit at the bar in front of a long case of pies, cakes, and desserts. "Want coffee, sweetheart?"

"If you could, that would be great." His smile was something made the world just a little more bright. I brought out a white mug from under the bar and quickly filled it up.

"Anything for that smile, sweetheart." I winked and went to go fill up Gary's coffee.

Oh my god, what am I saying to Captain freaking America?

"Can I get a name?" He asked as I cut out a hot piece of apple pie and placed it on a plate.

I put the plate in front of him and smiled, leaning on the bar with my forearms. "Maeve Stirling. And you're Steve Rogers."

"Steve Rogers? Not Captain America?" There was something in his eyes that told me that he liked it.

"Nope. I'd like to know Steve and not the Cap, if that's okay with you." I cocked an eyebrow at him and he let out a breathy laugh.

"I'd like that too, Maeve." Steve looked at me with a glint in his eye.

✪ ✪ ✪

Steve came in regularly for exactly nine weeks and always sat in my section. He would always ask what pie special was for that day and I'd give it to him.

Everyday, I learned something new about him.

He was all about the classics and always had a tiny notebook him in his pocket. He would catch up in modern day pop culture, then tell me about it the next day.

"I saw The Shining last night," He said, sitting down at the bar.

I shot him a dazzling smile. "And how was that?"

"I'll never look at twins the same way again," He chuckled as I poured coffee into his mug. "What's the special today, Mae?"

"Key Lime pie today, Cap. Can I get you a slice?" I didn't even have to look to know he nodded.

One of the waitresses, Judy, was rushing behind me with her hands full of food just as I turned to clear more plates.

We collided on full impact.

I gasped and threw my hands out and everyone in the room froze. The food, plates, and all the people in the room froze.

"Thank god for emotion based power."

I sighed and got to work balancing everything out on the trays and steadying them in Judy's arms before turning back to the Captain.

His face was shocked and his jaw dropped.

"You're not frozen." I said, flicking my hands at him again, but he remained unfrozen. "Why aren't you frozen?"

"Already tried it, it didn't end well," He commented and I felt my cheeks flush. "I'd like you to come with me, Maeve."

"Steve, it's not what you think," I said cautiously.

"Then tell me what it is then. Explain it to me." His blue eyes that were usually soft and kind hardened.

"Listen, I wasn't experimented on or genetically engineered or anything like that. I was born this way."

"Maeve, do you really expect me to believe that?" He questioned, crossing his arm across his chest.

"It's the truth," I pleaded. "Please, no one was supposed to know about this. You can't take me into S.H.E.I.LD."

"I'm sorry, Mae, I don't have a choice," I looked into Steve's eyes and realized there was no way I was getting out of this. "You may be a threat to a lot of people. It's my job; I'm a soldier." I nodded and let out a hefty sigh.

"I understand, Cap. I can't ask you not to do what you've been trained to do." I tapped my fingers on the counter. "Listen, just act normal when I unfreeze everyone. I'll go with you after I clean up and get out of my uniform."

Steve looked me over cautiously and I tilted my head to the side, arching an eyebrow.

"I promise, Steve." I smiled as he nodded and went back to my position. I flicked my hands and time started again, but with me helping Judy with her plates. "Whoa, there, Juds, you good?"

The older woman gave me a relieved smile. "Oh, bless your soul, Maeve, you're always comin' out of nowhere and saving me." She set down her tray and patted my cheek. "You go home, sweetness, you've been here since way before open."

"Listen, Judy," I looked at Steve and lowered my voice, leaning towards her. "You can't say anything, but I gotta disappear for a few days. Nothing I can do about it, but I don't think i can come in for work for a long while."

Judy throws a look over her shoulder where Steve was sitting. "Are you safe, doll?"

"More than you can imagine. I just need you to not make a scene as I leave."

"Anythin' for you, doll."
