We all went out to an early dinner afterwards on the strip of Washington D.C. It was a nice little restaurant, but just private enough for Steve to be relaxed. Steve's arm was draped over the back of my chair as we ate, making butterflies erupt in my stomach.

They swapped war stories and every once in awhile I would make a joke to make them both laugh. But mostly I just admired Steve while I ate. Watching him talk about the good ole days, his humble smile and bright eyes...it made me happy.

"So, how do you two meet?" Sam asked, taking a drink of his water.

"I'm a waitress at Pattie's and Steve likes his pie every single morning." I said, grinning at the Cap.

"Oh yeah?" Sam inquired and I placed my chin in my hand, looking at Steve fondly. "Cap doesn't really seem like the 'eat pie for breakfast' kind of guy."

I laughed. "Was is the rock hard abs that gave it away?" I saw Steve cover his face with his hand while chuckling and Sam let out a hearty laugh.

"More like the guy can run a 13 miles in like 30 minutes." I looked at Steve, gape mouthed. "Does she--Did she not know about how insane you take your athletics?"

"I mean, I had an idea, but jeez." I shook my head at him. "That's crazy, Rogers."

We all shared a laugh and Sam sighed heavily while standing up. "Well, I have responsibilities to do, so I gotta go,"

"So soon?" I asked, feeling Steve's fingers rub away knots in my shoulders.

"I'm afraid so, Maeve. It was nice talking to you guys." We waved goodbye as he paid for his meal and left the restaurant.

"Well, Rogers, I say we take a train to Times Square and walk the rest of the night away," I squeezed his hand and grinned at him.

"I'd like that very much." He grinned right back at me.

The sun was setting in Times Square as we arrived,  walking hand-in-hand, not a single care in the world.

"I think this counts as a first date, right?" I asked and Steve just chuckled.

"Looks like we didn't need to plan anything after all," There was a few moments of silence as we looked at the lights that lit up with city. There were a few street bands playing on makeshift drum sets and repaired instruments. I looked longingly at a cotton candy stand where the vender was making shapes with the food and Steve noticed.

"Steve, no, I was just looking--"

He just smiled and walked up to the vender, pulling me behind him, fingers still laced together. "Just one please, thanks." Steve leaned to the vender's ear, but I didn't make out what he said. The old man just simply smiled and nodded.

"Turn around," Steve mock-commanded and I laughed.

"Steve--"

He grabbed my shoulders and spun me around so that I was facing the lively square. It was busy with people, yet seemed so calm at the same time. "Just keep looking that way. I have a little surprise for you."

"Steve Rogers, you are a regular heartthrob." I sighed, keeping my eyes forward as instructed. I saw something pink in the corner of my vision and when I turned, it was a huge heart made of cotton candy on a white stick.

He held it out to me with a tiny bow. "For you, m'lady." I gave him a grateful look while taking my surprise. "I really want to make this work, Mae."

My heart warmed at his little nickname for me."I know, Rogers. Me too." I placed a hand briefly on his face before clearing my throat loudly. "Well, time for me to demolish this heart that you have ever so kindly given me."

He laughed. "I wouldn't have it any other way, Mae."

"You wanna see a trick, Rogers?" I inquired and he looked at me curiously. I quickly took the cotton candy off the stick, shoved it into a tiny ball in my mouth and finished it in under five seconds.

You would think after seeing me freeze time, Steve couldn't be more shocked by anything I had done. Well, you thought wrong. He looked so shocked, I thought I might choke on cotton candy and laughter.

His eyes were as round as plates and his jaw could've caught flies.

"Maeve Emma Stirling," Steve looked appalled with one hand on his chest, but also couldn't stop laughing. "You cotton candy eating fiend!"

I just squeezed my eyes shut as I nearly doubled over, my chest convulsing as I was trying to eat this hunk of cotton candy in my mouth.

Upbeat music started playing as the cotton candy dissolved in my mouth. I gasped and grabbed Steve's hand.

"Dance with me!" I said, grabbing his hands and pulling him into the flow of people beginning to do the same. The music sounded like something straight out of a Disney movie, but I felt it rise joy in my chest. Suddenly, I was being spun around and danced with someone  didn't know and so was Steve, but we laughed along anyway. Everytime it was time to change partners, Steve and I were close, but we would always get swept away by someone else.

The song was coming to an end, I found Steve's  eyes and he stretched his hand towards me and I did the same, making my way towards him. As soon as our fingers touched, he pulled me close and danced. We were both laughing as he spun me around, then stopped my movement just as the song ended.

"Come back to my place." He said, smiling wide. "I have something to show you,"

My state of happiness mirrored his. "Let's go."
