Steve told me about his vinyl music collection all the way back to his place. He had music of all sorts, classical, jazz, and just recently he added classic rock to the mix. As much as I could listen to him all day, I was exhausted.

As we went on the train, I placed my head on Steve's shoulder and that's the last thing I remember. The next thing I know, Steve is setting me down on my feet at the door of his apartment.

"I didn't know you were such a hard sleeper," He said, smiling. "That, or I am just that boring." I sheepishly looked up at him,  my face scrunching in confusion.

"I can fall asleep anywhere at anytime, but I didn't realize--" I looked and saw a woman looking at us, holding a basket full of clothes in one arm. "Oh, hello."

"I was just trying to make sure that this mysterious man hadn't drugged you then dragged you into his apartment to be chopped up into tiny pieces," She joked, making me sheepishly smile, leaning heavily on Steve.

"Oh, I'm completely safe, just a long couple of days." I reassured her and she laughed, starting to walk away.

"Oh, Steve, I think you left your stereo on," She commented before going downstairs.

"Thanks!" He called and when I focused my hearing, I could hear music behind the door. Steve turned suspiciously to the door and I looked at him, waiting for his instruction. "I know I didn't leave my music on," He whispered to me and my eyes widened.

"oh, well, that's great," I said, giving a thumbs up. "Only someone dangerous probably thinks they can break into Captain America's house."

"That's what I was thinking," He pulled his shield off his back. "I'm going to go through the window, you stay here."

"Steve, we aren't splitting up. Me and you together could literally kill a small army."

"But are you willing to kill?" He stepped toward and bent his head slightly. Just enough for be to be comfortable with space, but closer than just friends. When I didn't say anything, he smiled gently and brushed his knuckles over my jawbone again. "Stay here until I come and get you."

"I might not kill, but I can knock someone out. I'm going with you." I pushed past him and climbed out the window onto the fire escape. He was on my tail, grabbing my wrists and pinning them at either side of my body just above my shoulders.

"Do not put yourself in danger. I go first, no questions," Steve's voice was lowered but I could tell it was an order. His face was inches away from mine. This is was the distance I could kiss him. I could just tilt my chin and kiss him, right now.

But there was someone in his apartment and we were most likely in grave danger. So I didn't.

"Aye, aye, Captain," I whispered, and at my words, Steve's bright blue eyes dropped to my mouth. "Would it so be bad to kiss right now?" I asked, trying not to laugh and Steve pursed his lips and looked down, obviously trying to contain his laughter as well.

"Maeve, there very well might a deadly person just on the other side of that window," Steve's voice wavered from amusement, grinning. He dropped my wrists and mumbled an apology.

"Don't be sorry, Rogers, it's very attractive. In fact, I might as you to do it again so--" He clasped a hand over my mouth, struggling to contain his laughter.

"You can't say that to me, not right now!" He whisper yelled, on the brink of uncontrollable laughter. But behind the humor in his eyes was an unmistakable heat that I wanted to bask in. "I'm going to sneak in, be quick and quite. Stay behind me."

I would've bit my lip if Steve's palm wasn't pressed against my mouth. I just nodded and followed Steve through the window. I couldn't help but admire him as he crept along, careful not to make the slightest noise.

I grabbed his shoulder, making him look at me. The energy of whoever was in Steve's apartment was familiar. I focused on it and it all clicked.

"Steve, it's Fury." I walked into the living room, and there Fury was. Just laying down on one of Steve's arm chairs.

"I don't remember giving you a key," He tried to sound annoyed, but I could hear the relief in his voice.

"You really think I'd need one? My wife kicked me out." I felt Steve's hand entangle with mine, making a small smile turn up at my lips.

"Didn't know you were married," Steve commented, looking Fury up and down.
" A lot of things you don't about me,"

"I know, Nick. That's the problem," Steve sighed, turning on the light. I almost gasped and covered my mouth when I saw the injuries all over Nick's body. Steve's hold on my hand tightened and I leaned more into his arm. Fury turns off the light and writes something on his phone and shows it to us.

Ears everywhere.

"I'm sorry to have to do this on your date night, but I had no place else to crash," He typed something else on his phone.

SHIELD compromised.

"Who else knows about your wife?" Steve questions and Fury shows him another text.
 You, me, and her.

"Just...my friends." Fury grunts slightly as he stands up.

"Is that what we are?" I asked, laughing a little bit to ease make the conversation more believable. "I mean, you nearly got me killed on a mission the other day, with all due respect, sir."

"That's up to you," Everything happens so fast next, I couldn't tell you specifics, but Steve was pushing me down onto the floor, covering his body with mine I waved my hands and used my powers to drag Fury out of the line of fire. I did the same thing with Steve, making him slide across the wood floor and I army crawled after him.

"You didn't have to use your power on me," Steve said and I just huffed.

"A nice 'thanks' would've done just fine, Steve," Fury grabbed my hand and pressed a flash drive into my palm.

"Trust no one, but each other," His voice was weak and raspy, and the blood on his hands smeared onto mine. I flung my hands up and froze him, bleeding and all, just hoping to buy him more time.
"Captain Rogers?" We heard a voice call and both Steve and I turned to see Steve's neightbor with a gun.

"Are they letting nurses pack heat these days?" I questioned, my hands lit up with an orange aura around them, trying to keep the Director frozen.

"Captain, I'm Agent 13 of SHIELD Special Service,"

"Kate?"

"I'm assigned to protect you,"

"On whose order?" Steve asks. She notices Fury lying injured on the ground and what my hands are doing and  sighed heavily.

"His." She went to check for a pulse and I shook my head.

"You're not going to find one, every atom in his body has stopped. I don't know  how much longer I can keep him like this." Sweat gathered at my brow. "It's like something is trying to block me."

"You're doing great, I promise," She whipped out a walkie talkie from her scrubs. "Foxtrot is down, he's unresponsive. I need EMTs."

"Do you have a twenty on the shooter?" A voice crackled from other end.

"Tell him I'm in pursuit," Steve growled, meeting my eyes.

"Well, go get him, Cap!" I exclaimed.
