*Alexis's POV*
I was twelve going on thirteen the first time I saw a dead human being. It happened in the summer of 1959. A long time ago, but only if you measure it in terms of years. I was living in a small town in Oregon called Castle Rock. There were only 1,281 people but to me it was the whole world.
I was sitting in the tree house playing a game of thirty one with Teddy, Gordie and Chris. I was sitting next to Gordie on a small bench we had in the tree house. The smell of cigarette smoke was circulating around the tree house as Chris and Teddy smoked.
"Hey, how do you know a Frenchmen's been in your backyard?" Chris asked looking at the three of us.
"Hey I'm French okay?" Teddy said as if he was offended.
"Your garbage cans are empty and your dog's pregnant." Chris finished the joke.
Chris looked over to me and Gordie, the three of us laughing at Chris's joke.
"Didn't I just say I was French?" Teddy asked in an offended manner.
Chris brought his fist down on the table we were playing cards on, knocking twice on the surface.
"I knock." Chris called out.
"Shit." Teddy sighed out.
"29." Chris said proudly.
"22." Teddy sighed slamming his cards down.
"24." I sighed, putting my cards down and deciding I was done playing.
"Piss up a rope!" Gordie yelled slamming his cards down onto the table.
Chris, Teddy and I immediately began to laugh at Gordie's outburst.
"Gordie's out! Oh Gordie just bit the bag and stepped out the door!" Teddy said laughing at Gordie.
"Come on man deal." Chris said shuffling his cards.
Gordie picked up a magazine and began to read it. Meanwhile I just continued to watch Teddy and Chris begin another game.
Teddy DuChamp was the craziest guy we hung around with. He didn't have much of a chance in life. His dad was given to fits of rage. One time he held Teddy's ear to a stove and almost burnt it off.
"I knock." Teddy knocked twice on the small table, making Chris look up in disbelief.
"You four eyed pile of shit." Chris said in frustration.
"A pile of shit has a thousand eyes." Teddy said weirdly.
Chris looked over at me and Gordie, the three of us laughing at Teddy's words.
"What? What's so funny? Come on I've got thirty what have you got?" Teddy asked.
"16." Chris said putting his cards down on the table as he continued to laugh.
"Go ahead, keep laughing. You're down to your ride pal." Teddy said bringing his cigarette up to his mouth.
Chris began another round of 31.
Chris Chambers was the leader of our gang and my best friend. He came from a bad family and everyone just knew he'd turn out bad, including Chris.
Someone knocked on the tree house trap door, all of us exchanging looks.
"That's not the secret knock!" Gordie called out.
There were a few more knocks right before the person who was outside spoke.
"I forget the secret knock, let me in!" Vern demanded.
