Hazel sat tight in her seat, clutching her bags close to her. All around her, strangers sat on the subway, talking with each other or on phones or reading or listening to music or whatever. The subway zipped along at what seemed like warp speed to Hazel, on it's way to the fabled New York City.

Next to her, Hazel's dad smiled and patted her head. Hazel grunted and moved away. It was his fault they were sitting on this stinking subway, riding to New York City because he and her mother couldn't work things out.

Her mom and dad had divorced. Twice. They had met, gotten married, and divorced when Hazel was eight years old. Two years later, they married again, and they had divorced again two weeks ago. Now Hazel was being dragged off to New York City because her dad had insisted on a fresh start.

To make things worse, Hazel's birthday was in a few days. It would be her first birthday away from home, and she was sure it would be the worst one in her entire life.

"Almost there, Haze," Hazel's dad spoke up.

Hazel hated it when he called her "Haze". It was fine when she was about six, but now she was fifteen, and way too old for names like that. It was embarrassing, really. Then again, nearly everything her dad did was embarrassing.

Not long after, the subway screeched to a stop. Hazel jerked in her seat and wobbled to her feet as people began to exit into the city. Her dad held her hand as they left, and Hazel had no choice but to let him do it as they followed the crowd.

"Wow," Mr. Willis breathed as they left the subway station and entered the city. "Isn't is beautiful?"

Hazel silently agreed. It was beautiful. All the lights of the city-the headlights of taxis and cars, the windows of buildings, the street lamps-combined to create one flash of bright light that dazzled her. The night sky was a deep, beautiful indigo-blue, with shiny blotches of stars and a huge, round moon. But she kept her thoughts inside of her as she and her dad walked on.

They arrived at their apartment building soon after. Hazel's dad quickly checked then in, then they climbed up the stairs to their floor. Mr. Willis unlocked the door to their room, and Hazel trudged inside. She threw her stuff down and collapsed onto a couch.

"I see you're tired," Mr. Willis chucked. "Come in for bed when you're ready, okay?"

Hazel grunted in response. Mr. Willis headed off to the bedroom, dragging his stuff behind him. Hazel stared out the window, gazing at the city that stretched just outside.

Then, suddenly, she saw something.

Well, she saw four somethings. Four shadowy figures stood on top of a nearby building. It was nearly impossible to see them in the dark, and she couldn't see their faces, but they had what looked like the tails of bandanas waving from the back of their heads. Their eyes, barely visible, looked like glowing white slits, staring straight at her.

Hazel was creeped out. What were those? She rubbed her eyes. When she looked back out her window, the shadowy figures were gone.
